Okay not quite an ox. But an 8x4ft cutting area hiwin carriage, ball-screw and rack and a pinion, nema 34 and planetary gearbox design with twin 90x90 profiles for the x. These are 12mm water jet cut aluminium twin plates that will be spaced apart by 60mm square aluminum bar forming ballsrew and proximity switch mounts and increasing strength with aluminum channel reinforcement on the rear. Once complete i will release the designs to anyone interested, though i would love to post the build on here, im not sure it is an openbuild, though the gantry plates are ox inspired.
Very nice Jonny, I look forward to watching the progress. I think many builders will be interested to see the build, even though it's not an OX. The build logs provide inspiration and learning, especially from someone who started his CNC adventure building an OX.
Be more than happy to. However it may take a couple of months, due to the scary amount of money I've spent on it so far and now being flat broke.. Though I'm 2/3rd of the way there with materials. Just waiting on next pay day. But look forward to hearing your input over the course of the build.
You thinks so.. **** it. I was thinking of going for bigger box section . Weight is starting to be a factor now. this one weighs around 180kg and the gantrys and heavy alumimum profiles frame are almost 300kg. Going to need a telehandler to move the thing.

nema 34 8nm for x, 2 x nema 23 with 20:1 planetary gearbox 45nm with 40 tooth pinion to bring speed back up for y+a, Nema 23 for z. Should have tons of torque ac dsp driver for x, dc dsp driver for y+a+z

Sunny day today, so thought id work on her outside, and the wheels come in handy for that, Though the missus wants to enter it in a red bull soap box race, shes says it will already be the death of her. spec wise its outweighing any i have seen on the market within a £15000 price bracket, here in the uk at least. so still made a big saving really.
To make a bank of them running 24/7 for orders, someday. baby steps. will fit a 10hp atc spindle at some point for cutting alumimum and also working on an oscillating tangential knife that's going on there for foam.
Think it might be a good idea to cut the rack back so theres no way the 2 45nm motors dont try to fly of the end of the rail or round the pinions. anyone had proximity switches fail?

Did the face of your VFD just fit through the hole or did you have to remove it? Looks very elegant. What is the big coil looking thing next to the VFD?
Thanks! They are detachable for this exact purpose, only issue is there is no features around the side of the screen so makes mounting difficult. It's a toroidal transformer for my ac Nema 34 80v driver
First test and runs beautifully. Needs some motor tuning and probably should bolt the ballscrew mounts in, but should be making chips in no time.
facing the bed: small amount of chatter, seemed to reduce at higher rpm. most likely down to the dull cutter im using. Running a pretty aggressive acceleration of 1000mm/sec/sec. reducing this will smooth the lead in/out. feedrate 2880mm/min - have pushed it to 4000mm/min doesnt seem to bother it. Though the frame could do with a few more braces in the corners in the y direction so DiggerJ you wern't far wrong its not quite strong enough, but i suppose if you're moving 250 odd kg at 4000mm/min its subject to a fair few g's. easy fix, just a few more welds. Other than that real happy
