Hey guys, I have the Nema 23 425s with the two 36v 10a power supplies and the gecko g540. I read what joe was saying in about 48v being optimal in Ophis' question but I'm a bit thick about electrical calculations. How do I wire dual power to a gecko and what are the stats (visual aids appreciated)? Do two 36v 10a = 36v 20a?
Hey sw3Dp, I'm not an electrician. I work mechanical. From what I do know; this all depends on how you wire the DC side. If you wire them in series then you will double the voltage, but have the same current. Wired in parallel and you will have 36v but double the amperage capacity. If you wired these in series to get 72v then you could use a dc to dc step down (buck converter) then you could achieve the 48v you're after. I have no idea of the tradeoffs, sources of, how to spec. these, or any other components that may be necessary for the configuration. I was in this situation a few months back and decided to just order a 48v supply instead of buggering with more components or devices There are others around here that understand electrical much better then myself. I hope they chime for you with something more simple than buying a 48v supply. Joe
Hey Joe, Thanks, it took me a while to understand that the power supply doesn't power the motors it powers the stepper driver. For some reason I thought 36v 20amps would work but my problem was changing horses mid stream. Maybe I build one out of some pc power supplies 2 24v. jack
cool. electrical still flusters me till this day! You should get the 48v from two 24v pc supplies no problem, but the current capacity still has to be there. If you have that stuff then I'd recommend you unload it to others in the community that are running lower voltage/amp systems or off to ebay. either way just make a few bucks to offset any cost against a 48v sys. that has the right amp capacity for what you need. I even have a 24v supply I might not use. Maybe I should heed my own words and shave the fat. I just don't know yet if I'm going to use it for limits or not.
