this build is fantastic I am really looking forward to its completion. I have a number of projects that I can see I will be able to do with something like this
I've been running the FARM Controller (BBB /w MachineKit) on my main CNC (It's another brand that starts with a S and ends with a Oko...) for about 3 days. Runs sweet. I've added all the bells and whistles for the advance players and a simple GUI for the new ones. But believe me the Advance players are going to love the extra features. For example- Quick Edit, The push notifications will show Job start (M197) Job Completion (M198) and Tool Changes (M199).
Great design. I will be building the 5 axis version. Why the BBB system, I ask because I have both the planet-cnc MK3 control and a TinyG that are both able to control a system like this. Is there an advantage to your control?
You can use any motion controller you want. I just prefer LinuxCNC. Alot more options. Touch probing, Fixturing a'la G54, presetting Tool Offsets, Custom M-codes, 3D Digitizing, Localized g-code sending and performance to name a few. Plus the advantage of using any driver package you want with a simple breakout board.
Currently waiting for a X2 mini mill to arrive so I can cut the steppers plates out at the thickness I want. This unit already is CNC ready so it just the matter of installing steppers and adding the profile to the FARM Controller.
I just started going down the LinuxCNC path, more for education than anything else! I currently have an Ox derivative running Grbl/xPro CNC controller. I have a BBB now with Xylotex BBB_25 parallel port and MachineKit loaded. What did you use for a driver board? Looks like a TB6600 board? Any detail on that hardware? After a lot of reading, this is my first post, and gotta say, this machine is mind-blowing! I'm coming from 3d printing, but definitely would make an effort to get one of these working... Eager to see the assembled monster!

Well, I decided to take the task and build something similar, I'll go for the 5 axis milling variety... Since I don't have a great deal of experience in CNC, it will probably take many months to accomplish, so your documented progress, ymilord, would greatly make my effort a lot easier... So far I've ordered a BBB, the 7.0” TFT LCD CAPE, a DB25, a 5 axis breakout board and stepper drivers and motors. I'm still considering the layout for the 5 axis, and would love to hear other peoples ideas on the subject. What I'd really like to accomplish is something like this http://www.pocketnc.com, the openbuilds way, using c-beams. For now, I'm favoring a layout like this for the 5 axis: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Free...ew-Table-Column-Type-milling/32341244073.html I'd like a different design for the trunnion table though, something more along pocket nc's aproach.

Nothing to report for now. A couple life issues has come up. Plus the budget I was using for this build has been moved to something else. As soon I get back started again. I'll start posting again.
I hope the "life issue" is not too serious and you are allowed to refocus soon. I've been watching this build for a while and look forward to it's completion. We have all been there from time to time. Some of us just call it life, but that's my little issue If you might be so inclined, could you suggest any videos/reading on setting up Linux CNC and connecting the BBB to the rest of the hardware? I've picked up a BBB and a 7" lcd recently with the intent of following your lead on this build. Being software de-clined I need things as simple as possible. Big pics, drawings in crayon and such.
Were does this project stand? I hope to see it finished or at least a list of materials and a way to copy what has been done so far?
I'm building a similar machine without the C axis. Did you experience any stiffness issues with the Z axis twisting around the vertical axis slightly when moving back and forth on the X axis under load?
