I'm thinking there must be a blade for my compound mitre saw, but is that the way to go?

These are best cut with abrasive cutting wheels or with a common hack saw. I typically use a Dremel with a metal cutting disk or a grinder with a thin abrasive disk. The compound mitre saw would probably be the last thing I'd try.

Thanks, makes total sense. Any suggestions for how best to cut the aluminum extrusion?

Miter saw with a high tooth count non-ferrous metal cutting blade. There's a whole post on the subject somewhere here in the forum.
