Testing using Grbl Panel and a program for a part i previously made. I tested the z axis travel with a level mounted on the x axis beam to see if it would maintain it's level.
I'm very surprised and pleased to say it works as I had hoped.

    Richard,

I love this idea, it has crossed my mind more than once lately. I've wanted to do something similar and look forward to seeing your results as you progress with the build.

I think having the X and Z movements on their own respective gantries will prove to provide a much more stable spindle, and hopefully relieve some of the spindle variation issues I've read about!?!?

Keep up the great work...it's very exciting :)

Richard - you've got one of the few CNC builds that use multiple steppers on one axis. How did you drive them?

What firmware did you use? I'd like a copy if you don't mind.

I'm just starting to get GRBL running on my 2650 based controller. So far it compiles & uploads but I can't communicate with it over the USB port.

    Hi
Remember to communicate at 115200 baud, GRBL 0.8 defaulted to 9600, but 0.9 is 115200 so you have to tell your GUI program to use that speed.

do you think there is going to be a deflection issue with the gantry so tall? I didn't see any cross bracing on the uprights and would think there could be a lot of twist when cutting on the X axis, especially if you were cutting up near the top of your limits. I R a shirt cuff engineer (i.e. it LOOKS like it should work) so I could be totally wrong ;)

I had the same problem with the stock C Beam machine. I was going to try something else until I saw your build. You probably saved me a lot of time and trouble. I have the same goal to use a vice and/or build a table with slots to clamp material/jigs to. Now if I can get the second axis slaved to Z I should be good to go.
