Great idea pulling the divider, maximize your envelope. I also like your colored plastic bracket, well made and a nice look. Did you intend to use color or was it just available? You have given me some ideas for additional parts. :)

I have made some other builds with that color, it just looks very cool. That final mirror holder was the last piece :(

    Very inspiring build!

So how much of the v-slot do you need to do this build? did you measure the sizes of the cuts you needed for the frame?

Thanks Aaronvt, and as you say should be only for inspiration, i wanted to prove it was possible and fairly easy . You need to consider that i attached the gantry to the sheet metal on the sides. As we know this machines are made without making sure they are square.

    Y Side profiles are 350mm
X profile is about 744mm ( you should mesure once you have everything else in place )

I have a K40 and can appreciate your comment about the machines not being very square. I've been facing issues with the stock gantry being skewed, and the "floor" panel being uneven. I've removed the stock support and replaced it with a powered Z-table... my biggest challenge there was squaring it to an un-square gantry, and leveling it to an un-level bottom :)

I've been tempted to gut the gantry and build one like you did, but I might stay with the original sized. I'd start out by assuming nothing was level or square, and build the gantry system to float and provide as much structure itself. I have to wonder though, at what point should we consider just ditching the enclosure itself and building one out of any of the various maker-beam/open-beam type products.

Lastly, how do you like your Smoothie conversion? I'm running a Lasersaur setup using an Arduino Mega + RAMPS ... not bad, but I'm always looking for other options.

EDIT: I noted on your build list that you include new steppers... any reason for this?

@Dregs ive being using LaserWeb since over a year, at that point and still today it is compatible with grbl and smoothie, both superior to ramps ( i hate compiling ). The reason i chose to put new steppers is simple: First i had them, second the is no information on the stock steppers to properly setup the current. Nothing else.

At this point i was going to start a new mod to build a complete gantry but my tube has died so there is not much interest now :(

I downloaded the files and they are really weird. Some of the parts aren't there and the ones that are scattered throughout the whole page and have a bunch of lines around them?

Files dxf downloaded are not consistent. Do you need to open them with a specific program?

You have made available the dxf file of plexiglass details. I opened the file with autocad, but the result is vertical lines. It does not appear as indicated by you in your reply of 2 August 2017. The question is, it takes a dedicated software.
    Ciao Alessandro

You mean the rails? If its that then you need to calculate yourself based on the current location of the mirrors, each machine is constructed differently

Great build, how about a file for the acrylic parts in svg? Some of us don't use sketchup or have a program to open 3d dxf files and need something in a 2d format.

Excellent looking conversion. I'm doing similar here in Salisbury UK ... so a question please ?
What are you using for the carriage bar - is it simply a piece of 20mm sqr extruded Alluminium bar ?

Another question too please..... the firmware will presumably needs adjusting for the increased cut area.... how is this done, or do you simply load bigger images to cut ?

My software skills are not good, so any advice is welcomed

    Thanks

    All profiles a Openbuilds 20x40

You just load a bigger image unless you set up firmware limits that are not on by default.

I wonder if someone , one day, will notice that there is a niche market in just making strong, empty, laser cabinets?
They could make basic cases, or even kits, and then work up to really classy looking units.
