For your stepper driver issues, I'd imagine that you've cooked the driver chips, they are pretty light duty. Replacing them with 8825's will help with some of that. NEMA 23 stepper motors are more current hungry and the ??4988?? just don't have enough capacity. The 8825's are really just big enough. Although 24v should be about perfect for the steppers I think you are using, over voltage can cause stepper motors to over heat and fail. It takes a lot of heat to fry a stepper, but I've done it and so have many others. Can you tell me how many jumpers you are using under the driver chips and which pins you are jumping? On your y axis, are you slaving that with the A axis to drive both sides? If your stepper motors have more than 4 leads, how do you have them wired and what are their ID numbers? I'll be happy to see if I can help you with this overheating problem, but it can be a stinker to sort out at times.
Hi Stargeezer , I can't thank you enough for your help and kind words. I currently have some DV8825's on the way hopefully they will arrive any day now. As for my motors I have Nema 23 4 wire with green/red yellow/blue. I paired off the motor phases by essentially shorting out the motor without power if that makes sense , I figured this would be the best way as there was no schematic with the motors or any alpha numeric labelling I had seen on other posts. There is potentially a problem with sequence now that I think of it . I'll have a look when I get home. For The stepper motor jumping I intend on cloning the y axis. The Cnc sheild came pre assembled with all headers in place all I had to do is push in the drivers , there is good potential that I have missed somthing there. I did a bit of research on the colours but everything I found was a vauge My stepper motors were working fine on all axis when I tested the independently before I had issues, now when I attempt to move the motors with just one driver in , IE the y axis without leads crew, the driver gets extremely hot hence I assume it's shorting. I should mention that before I had the issues when moving the z axis up and down it would go fine one way then not move/ slowly grind the other way seemed to get worse , then when I power cycled the machine it diddnt work. Ok Joe. You didn't mention tuning the drivers, which is required and can lead to overheating. There are a ton of videos on the web that can walk you through the simple process. I might forget something if I try working from memory. (what can I say, I'm old ) As for the axis moving one way but not the other - well that's another sign of un-tuned driver. I have a hunch that one problem with the Z axis is that the microstepping jumpers are not quite right. As I recall there is one jumper removed but I can't say which one right now. I'll get that info in a day or two. The router I set up for my son uses this system and I'll need to go there to check it out.
