Ok, I bought laser engraver system, and then enlarged it. I am hooked. Now I want to plan a router system. I have been looking around for ideas, and have a question. In the "Y" axis, which is better, make the part move, or the gantry. I have seen both, but am wondering what the pros / cons are for each? What are the thoughts here?
Depends on the size of the parts. If the parts are bigger than the bed it is best to have a stationary part and a moving gantry. If for instance you want to do a 6' sign on a 2' bed. Carve, shift, carve, shift, carve and you're done. (Search toolpath tiling on youtube for an explanation.)
Yeah, I understand the tiling thing on large parts, and it is a good point to consider. I am still wondering if there is anything to consider on the machine itself.
mass.... going to extreme... if you are going to cnc a thimble then moving the part makes sense... if you are going to cnc a engine block then moving the gantry makes sense. Size.... a 4x8 sheet of plywood if you move the plywood you will need at least 4x16 or 8x8 of shop space. if you move the gantry you will just 4 1/2 x 8 1/2 of shop space.... If you are making a hobby cnc in a reasonable size it really doesn't matter it's up to what catches your eye..... Bob
