I thought a shielded cable was recommended?

You may be right that shielded cable would be better, but what is on the CNC now is unshielded. I am not replacing the wires because of a problem, but because of a birds nest. I mounted the g540 on the back of the x gantry and their is just no good way to manage the wires (and keep them off the spoil board. I am moving the g540 off the CNC entirely.

if you could lightly twist the pairs (from the same phase) together then sleeve the wire in braid to make it cleaner, but shielded 18awg wire is cheap and you can use the drain to ground, helps even more. but if you don't use limit switches then you probably wont have any issues anyway.

I use jacketed multi-conductor cables fora variety of things. It keeps everything clean and simple, as well as together but separated. This is 20awg form Digikey.
