    Hello,

    I've been reading for DIY CNC for almost too long now, I was about to pull trigger on very expensive ballscrew what i saw the OX....
    It looks perfect for what i need and budget(1k).

    I had a look on breakout box and there's so many available product that I'm very confuse about what is really needed.

    what would be difference with a breakout USB + 4 stteper drivers and a smothies or the gshield?

    The only real diff that would matter is the amps that could be supplied to the motors from your drivers IMO

    Hi everybody,

    I am also planning to build an OX and I am trying to source all components. I have have viewed the build-videos and tried to read trough the 37 pages of this thread :banghead:

    It is mentioned that the grblShield is probably undersized for the motors. But is practice, is it up to the job?

    I have been using the grblShield and it works like a charm, I have little fan blowing on it and it works great.
    One of the new boards I am testing now called the CNC xPRO a controller. http://www.spark-concepts.com/cnc-xpro-controller/
    This is a really nice all in one usb cnc driver with lots of nice features.

    I'm gonna have to ask you some things about this little unit when you've had time to try it out. You know I was planing on getting the USB/CNC Controller, but now I am having a rethink here.
    Maybe you can do a review on this in the not to distant future.

    I plan on doing many future builds using the xPRO board, so hopefully these videos will help. But to be honest is a very easy board to work with you simply plug it in connect the motors and load any Grbl control software and your ready to rock. :thumbsup:

    I meant that I was about to build my CNC the standard way with ballscrews....

    Mark, what do you expect to happen with your V Slot Extrusion Stock. I see that you have 20 x 80 coming in next week, but no notes on the 20 x 60 and 20 x 40. Let me know if I should be looking to get this from one of the other suppliers where available or if you think you are getting stock on all three thicknesses?

    Hi guys, my 2x4 Ox is comming together thanks in no small part to Chris Laidlaw for his machine work. I am curently wireing but there is one thing that keeps bugging me. As I slide the X axis (no belt installed) back and forth I get a couple of small bumps. Don't know if it's inperfection in the wheels or the V slot but the spots are not evenly spaced so I'm thinking the v slot. Am I being to picky or is this going to be a problem. Also I'm going to use 4 stepper drivers as I don't like the idea of running 2 motors off of one driver. In Mach 3 do I just give the left and right X the same output bit and change the direction in the software or is there away to tell the software you are diving 2 steppers with one output? Or on the breakout PCB do I just wire the same output to both drivers? Would love to see some videos of an Ox at work. Thanks...

    I would recommend having each stepper on its own output from the controller or B.O.B to its own drive as then you can do auto squaring!

    In Mach3 set each motor up as its own axis under the ports and pins menu and then slave one axis to the other under the slave axis menu. You will need to restart Mach3 and I would recommend dropping your jog speed down VERY low before moving the duel axis a tiny bit to check that your motors are both turning the right way. If the gantry racks then you can reverse one motor under the homing and limits menu by using the tick box labeled reverse.

    Great, so there is a slave menu in the software, guess I need to look at it closer. I agree that giving each motor it's own output pin is better. Any sugestions about my bump?

    Also I was planing on leaving one belt off untill I know there moving in the same direction.

    Don't worry about it till you see bad results repeatably in the same spot from your cut parts.... Often tiny bumps will not be notable in the actual cut so not really worth worrying about too much IMHO

    Hi Paul.
    If it's a definite "bump", then I'd say it should be detectible by sliding your nail along the v slot, if it's the rail. If it's a more gentle variation, then you could be looking at a warp, which is very rare with extruded rail.

    If it is not the rail, then perhaps you could adjust one wheel slightly tighter, and then slacken off the others. Then use process of elimination, and the faulty wheel would become apparent. Although, one revolution on these wheels would not cover much track, so there would be several "bumps" across the axis.

    Hello everyone. I am new and am currently half way through reading all the posts (whew!) I am going to build the OX and I have been monitoring the store for some time and the v-slot has been "out of stock" since I found this site...
    1. Any word on when it will be available? AND will it be available in the RED? :)
    2. Any thought on creating a single v-slot package that contains all of the required v-slot to build? (just click on a single item and BAM all the necessary v slot is in your cart)
    3. On that same note, maybe creating a "individual build phase packages" (ie, v-slot, all electronics, all hardware, etc) for those of us that might have to order in phases?
    4. Has the OX plates been made available for purchase from the store yet?

    Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions and hope to start my build soon

    Well, I was able to order 90% of the parts needed for my OX build last night. Still need 1 piece of BLK 20x40mm (1500mm) aluminum v-slot. I am also waiting on ordering the driver board because I don't know which I want to go with; I am considering the board on OpenBuild's site. So here is my question...

    As a newbie into the CNC realm, which would be my best bet (and easiest software pkg to learn). I am trying to keep this cost down for right now as I can always update the board later after I replenish my pocket change :)

    I am leaning towards using Mach3 and I have an older computer sitting around that I can throw WINXP on. I ordered the NEMA 17 and 3 NEMA 23's for my OX and am also wondering if I should get the 24v PS or the 12v.

    Thanks in advance for any comments/suggestions/recommendations

    Another parts question...

    I noticed that the router mounting plate/gantry plate, motor mount plates, end-stop plates, etc., were not listed and am wondering if the number of wheels on the list included those needed for the Z-axis etc. What else might be missing that I will need that is not identified on the parts list?

    The machine control software is very much a matter of personal choice - I prefer Mach3 but there again I have been using it for 10 years now (since it was Mach2). As for stepper motor drive voltage 24 Volts would be considerably better than using 12 Volts.

    Also, some builders have switched to a nema 23 and 20 x 60 for the Z axis.
    Other than this minor change made by some builders, I do not know of anything changed from kram242's great Ox CNC design.

    Chris, yeah I was considering that earlier on but thought I would just keep it simple......Never works that way does it? lol... SO I just now went ahead and did the upgrade and ordered another NEMA 23 and some 20x60mm for the Z.
    So now I have an extra NEMA 17...unless OpenBuilds will pull it out of my order and give me a store credit for it ;) but it is probably too late for that.

    Ordered the aluminum Gantry plates and Universal NEMA 23 threaded rod plates from Chris today :)

    So all I am lacking is on piece of v-slot (20x40mm - 1500mm) and the controller board combo. Just waiting for them to arrive back in stock.

    You might want to check at ProtoDrake, they had the 20x60 real early this and they have a few choices for the controller as well. They are on Canadian side of border ...

    If you are waiting for the controller combo from Synthetos, they haven't been in stock for over 7 months now so I'm not truly sure it is worth continuing to wait. Both Inventables and Adafruit claim to have stock in both the Uno and the V5 gShield right now (but these items tend to disappear rather rapidly). And at Inventables, you can get the Uno with grbl already installed.

    ok...got my gshield v5 and the seeduino v3 ordered (found the gshield on Amazon and the seeduino at Inventables). Now waiting for the 20x60 v-slot. Serge, I am considering ordering from Canada, but wondering if I should just wait a week to save money.....lol
