Can anyone explain the best method to ground shielded stepper cables with DB9 connectors? I also need some help with the limit switches. I understand that one end should be the ground / drain, just want to make sure that i am doing it correctly. I am running a Gecko G540 on the electronic side.
Here is a photo inside one of my past Gecko G540 DB9 connectors. As you can see I have my stepper coils wired to pins 6,7,8,9 and my current set resistor to pins 1,5. Mariss ( Gecko ) has pointed out in older post's you can connect your stepper motor shield to either pins 2,3,4. In older revisions of the G540 manual this was also detailed. As of Rev-8 or the manual this info is no longer present. The method I have found to work best is using a Star Ground on the control side only. This is a single point your mains earth is connected to along with all shielding from both stepper motors and limit switches. You will also connect all power supply earth grounds and bonding conductors from all metal to this point. I will try and cover this topic in greater detail when my current build reaches that point (also using a G540) There are some excellent technical discussions on this subject over on cnczone if you wanted to read into it more as well.
Thanks for the info! I am going to look into the Star Ground method. I had some issues with signal loss grounding through the G540 during testing, so i want to stay away from using the pins.
