I have found my Y axis noisier at times - a spray with silicone lubricant on the leadscrew reduced the noise significantly. If your wheels aren't touching the rails then that needs addressing, but I wouldn't have thought it would cause a lot of noise. Let me know how you get on.
    Alex.
PS - I now have 28 trophy points! Not sure what the significance of this is - don't think I get any discounts or anything.

That is my kind of Trophy. I wonder if they have it at my local beer importer.

    Good Morning @Alex Chambers
I'm about to throw this machine out the bloody window if I'm totally honest :banghead::banghead::banghead:
please see new thread I'm at my wits end. maybe its just stupid old me but to be honest there have been too many snags to justify the monetary outlay....I thought this morning was going to be a walk in the park then onto perhaps doing something constructive and time well spent...how wrong I was...up since 6.30 am and still struggling...lol....its funny but not funny at the same time

Have you ever seen a 56 year old doing a cartwheel...NO!...hahahahahahaha
I'm up and running peeps.:thumbsup::thumbsup:.it's been a long journey, longer than I had envisaged but hey with some great forum help from @Alex Chambers etc. finally I'm in a good place, well for now at least...I might even crack open a wee bottle of RED....
Turned out it was a wiring problem with the motor leads at the DUET Controller end, nothing to do with not being square as I knew it was all along or eccentric spacers for that matter....Really their should be better options out there as I crimped, re crimped and crimped again :cry::cry:
But its all good now...I'm a tad annoyed at having to do all this work to 3 out of the four motor wires but at the same time satisified that I come through that process, at least I'm a dab hand with the crimp tool now hahahaha I just need to be uber careful putting the fan assembly back on as to not disturb the wires and connectors comming from the DUET.....to me they could have allowed an extra 10mm of a standoff....
Here follows a video of the homing cycle (sorry about the super excited jerky bit at the end lol)...I must remember to untick that box now @Alex Chambers

I haven't watched the build video for the Bee yet, but I downloaded the sketchup file and have been studying that. In the sketchup file the V-channels under the spoil board lay flat. Is the sketchup file incorrect or did you come up with a better way to attach the spoil board? or are you trying to add strength?

    Hi @Stan Howe
All I got with the kit was 2 lengths of wide "V" channel for the interior struts and double "L" brackets so I figured that's the way they go ....some images show different ways of fitting the carriers/strengtheners...This was what I had in front of me...as I wanted my spoilerboard in the HIGH position anyway for now at least.

Hi @Stan Howe, there are two ways of mounting the spoiler board on the workbee from Ooznest - the high setting Colin has used (better rigidity in the Z axis) and a lower setting that Openbuilds tend to go with that gives a greater depth of cut. If you look at the end of my build report (Worbee with Duet controller) you will see a third way (I did have to add more support under the middle of the spoiler board supports I put on)

Tell me about it @Alex Chambers:rolleyes: ...That took a bit of time firstly to ascertain what was wrong..and secondly the time (perhaps wasted) to re crimp all those wires...I must have been unlucky to have 3 out of 4 fail...but it is extremely satisfying to come out the other end with the solution...
I feel that Ooznest need to readdress this area as it can be very off putting to a newbie faced with having to do this...certainly not what I was expecting....If it wasn't for the support network in this forum how would a newbie rectify this problem on his/her own....
    Thanks again buddy...

Colin, when you have unticked the setting "allow moves without homing" (and saved settings) you will have to home all axes whenever you switch on your machine before you can do anything else.
Make sure Duet web control is showing machine co-ordinates. Jog the machine as close as you dare to the framework on both the X and Y axes. Make a note of the machine co-ordinates for the X and Y axes. You need to deduct those readings from the maximum dimensions for your machine in config.g. Don't forget to re-upload your edited config.g to your duet web control.
Once you have done that your software settings will stop you accidentally driving your machine into the framework.
    Alex.:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

@Colin Mccourt don't give up brother, once you are though this you will know the machine inside and out and be better off for it. from the sounds of it your having problems with the electronics and thats usually the hardest part of any build. Can you send me a message I would like to try and help you out if I can :)

Hi Colin, really pleased that the major problems have been sorted - have you let Oozenest know about your wiring problems? They are not going to improve things unless they get feedback.

Tomorrow night I will construct an email to them @Alex Chambers (they wont pick it up until start of business Monday anyway).. I will air my displeasure with this side of the build purely from a novice perspective...TBH I don't want to weigh in too heavily because their customer service is second to none and they do go that extra mile to help customers be it answering phones, emails and sending out replacement parts as you well know..but I will definitely be making them aware...This seems to be a common problem so rectifying it would save a lot of folks a lot of head-scratching down the line

They will appreciate the information from someone who has managed to sort it out and can point out where exactly the problems arose. :)
Go for it, for the next Newbies who come along.

I could not have done this on my own @GrayUK it's more than likely a well known issue... @Alex Chambers was well aware of this (wiring defect) thank goodness... and was able to give me some pointers on rectifying a wire connection loss...what I was not prepared for was multiple failures...clearly this aspect needs to be addressed for the future (I was sent a new set of wiring even though I only wanted a limit switch) so I thought ah ha just do a complete wire swap out, but the NEW wire failed also)...There has to be a better way...I'm happy with The DUET connectors that's just standard computer stuff (I have built a few PC's in my time) some have issues with flimsy connectors but I'm happy with the connector pins, my main concern was the quality of the wiring...It's basically a simple job..but if not done correctly it can, as I am a witness, lead to all sorts of problems that take time to eliminate..

Yes Colin - I used to be a design and technology teacher - some of my A level students would build robots as their major project, so I am familiar with the way stepper motors behave when one phase has a bad connection! In those days we programmed microcontroller chips in machine code, Windows 3 was the bees knees (in fact I loved Win 3.11 because I could hack it so that the kids didn't get any menu options - just a list of programmes they were allowed to run) and networking was Novell - the manuals were 18 inches thick!
Fortunately I have forgotten most of that:ROFL:.

You must have had the patience of a saint lol
A big step up from MS Dos then hahahaha....at least you had a GUI .....seriously though thanks for spotting my problem man...it probably would have come down to that in the end but I just didn't think that in this day and age a simple wire connector would pose a problem.. You take these things as a given (I now know different)....Can you imagine a large tech company sending out duff wiring, it wouldn't be long before the phones started ringing.

    Hi Guys,
Any electricians out there or someone who would know how to perform this (possibly simple) little task below..
The PSU from this CNC machine resides around the back of my bench ....in a limited space I would have to reach around to turn the Duet on and off.
I would dearly like to have a simple switch (think single domestic light switch) attached to the front of my workbench (slimline plastic pattress) so as I could control the unit from there...I dont want any more extension leads.....Can this be done in a simple tidy fashion...
    Regards
    C

Hi Colin, will the mains lead from your power supply reach to the front of your bench? If so, move your double socket to the left side and switch your Duet power supply on and off from there.

I cut my IT teeth on a Sinclair ZX81 followed by a commodore pet (with a disc drive!) I loved MSdos, especially all the things you could do with batch files (our science dept were very cavalier about viruses so I set the machines up so that nothing would run unless there was a disc I had set up in the drive).
Just a thought - you and I had a few problems with our kit built cnc machines - imagine the learning curve for the folk on this forum who designed and built their machines from scratch.
    Alex.

    Very good! (sign)
You can get the bits you need from screwfix - plug, length of 3 core 5amp flex, a 3 terminal connector - take the plug off the end of the mains lead, fix it and a short length of flex into an appropriate connector (eg 54936) fit a plug on the end.

    Cheers again @Alex Chambers
on a different note...with my spoiler board being in the high position...does it matter how high the spindle is in the Z axis...I had to lift it up not only to clear any work I'll be doing (mainly 18mm) but also to change bits...does it matter how high you set the spindle holder?? again probably a daft newbie question

I've set mine so that the bottom of the collet nut is a fraction below the bottom of the Z axis. It could probably go a bit higher - basically you want to be able to use the full depth of any cutter without the Z axis hitting the workpiece.

Hi Colin, not sure I can help much with this one - I suspect it's a WiFi problem (I'm using the ethernet version) I can only suggest you check that you have a WiFi connection in your garage (router still working?) and that the settings for the Duet/WiFi are correct. If you have got a dodgy WiFi connection I suggest a range extender such as TP Link (there are better ones but that one's cheap-ish)
    Best of Luck,
    Alex.:cry::cry::cry:
