You guys are killing me. I am 152 miles away from mine so I can't look. To rub salt in the wound, I got an email about it today challenging me to find it.

cracked it !!! just waiting on the email but while im here im kind of confused with the micro stepping. First is there any benefit to 1/16 or 1/32? second the documentation says its 1/8 default but looking at my board mode 1 and 2 seem to be open

    Congrats on cracking the code!

There's numerous debate threads on microstepping in the forums. They go into great length. Here's one: Micro stepping Myths and Realities For more, do a search, but I think that one will answer your question.

As far as the jumpers go, it does certainly look like they are both open. Peter will get eyes on this and be able to address this.

Its definitely set to 1/8th. Theres a little track under the black soldermask on the appropriate jumpers

1/8th gives the perfect power-to-resolution balance for most of our users on most of our hardware.

Higher microstepping: quieter motors, theoretically better resolution, but much decreased torque.
Lower microstepping: more torque, a little more noise (like you are gonna hear the motors over the sound of the router hehe) and less theoretical resolution.

Note re resolution. Only single steps are precise. Microstepping is an approximate interpolation between physical steps. It was actually designed to smooth out harmonics, not increase resolution

If you really did crack step 1 its just a clue to the next step (there are several) which will lead you to a point where you wont need to ask How or Where... Its 100% clear if you did crack all the steps

The black box is great. It simplified the process for me both in construction and cable routing. The software helped me with what can be steep learning curve for the new user. Thanks the open build concept works with your great products and your support.

    Thanks

Well the point of this is a treasure hunt, so cant really tell you step by step right?

Your doubt means you havent figured out step 1... If you did, you wouldnt be asking what to do. Youd know. So check again, you maybe only have half?

I cracked it finally. just waiting for the email response now. I've actually been thinking of getting another blackbox for my cnc machine, the one I have right now I use for my laser. Or is it possible to have 2 machine profiles on it?

Email? Theres no email involved in the process :(
So you sure you did the whole thing?

[edit tested the whole process myself a few mins ago and its works as planned... if you did complete the process (all the secrets) and it didnt give you a code, PM me and we'll see if we can figure out why]

Grbl only allows one set of configurations.

Of course you could set the settings each time you switch to another machine, but that sounds like a schlep. I'd personally prefer a controller on each machine. All the reconfiguring, replugging, etc may just cause a lot of unplanned wear and tear

I get a window popup thats ask for my info to send me the code, unless i have to disable any ad blockers for it to truly complete

never mind, just did it again and the coupon popped up. I used safari the first time, not sure if thats and issue for anyone else. this time i used chrome.

IMG_20190529_154706792~2.jpg Mine came in today! The question is, is there an Easter Egg on this one leading to the gold plated BlackBox. ;)

Can I get some help understanding how to choose a stepper motor for BlackBox (the most powerful that it will reliably drive)?
From earlier posts I remember the following parameters: 4A and 3-10V. My questions are:

    1. should try to match the resistance with the highest voltage in the suggested range? i.e. 10V/4A = 2.5 Ohm and look for steppers that are closer to these 4A and 2.5Ohm per phase?
    2. why 4A and not 3.2A?

    1. Or just rely on the fact that we went through all the maths and then stacks of sample motors, and then years of proving them in the field, to test a combination that performs optimally, and get some of our NEMA 23 Stepper Motor - High Torque Series - which would be the best most powerful motor to use with this setup. In fact BlackBox was designed to suit the motor, not the other way round)
    2. It is 4A Max (peak, for a couple fractions of a second) and 3.2A RMS (continuous): ie look for motors around the 3A mark

Man, I can't figure out how to post a new thread on this site so I'm doing a reply thread. Sorry about that. I've got a big ox machine. I am thinking of changing from tinyg/chilippeppr as my tinyg has packed it in, to the new black box. I guess I would have to download GRBL. Don't know anything about it, any good sites to suggest how to download it and use it? Also can't find big ox on the list of machines in cam g code generator. Which one should I use from the list?

    Thanks

    BlackBox comes preinstalled with Grbl.

All you have to download (one of many options, but aimed at beginners) is OpenBuildsCONTROL from OpenBuilds Software - FREE Software for CNC Control: OpenBuilds CONTROL and OpenBuilds CAM

    Workflow:
    1. Draw in CAD
    2. Export to SVG or DXF
    3. Open in a CAM program or OpenBuilds CAM Gcode Creator - Public Beta
    4. Use CAM to setup toolpaths and export GCODE
    5. Open GCODE in OpenBuildsCONTROL
    6. Connect to controller, jog to origin of material, click SetZero, then run the GCODE
