It only comes on when the 24v side power is on. Is this not the case for you? Are you sure you wired it correctly when you built it?

I received my replacement fan this morning. Fan still not coming on. I have the 24v power supply turned on (router led) light comes on and have turned on the on/off switch on the black box. The black box is getting pretty hot. Is there a temp delay built into the works or should the fan come on immediately? I even removed the top to check the fan connection. I had no doubt that wasn't the problem or at least having it hooked up incorrectly as it is DC and even if it was backward, my experience is the fan would be turning backward as well. All stepper motors work just fine. Limit switches do not stop moving as I had expected. That probably is another matter. Although now I need to readjust gantry as left side kept moving after right side encounter limit switch and I was on the other end of the unit. Took a little bit of time for me to get to the power switch. I thought the reason for the limit switch was to stop the unit with a fault to prevent one side bumping and the other moving?
Hi stumpy, the polarity does matter (it is labeled + for red and - black ) and make sure your power supply is set to the correct input voltage with the small switch on the side for 120V AC or 220V AC operation (edit; this is probably fine as the motors are working!). Also double check that the two boards are plugged in correct and no pin is misaligned. As for the limit switches you need to have them enabled in the settings, test them manually instead of crashing into them to make sure they work before doing damage. Cheers Gary
Modern fans are solid state brushless DC motors with control circuitry inside. Getting the polarity wrong will fry them. So was it hooked up wrong, admitting will help us zoom in on the problem It was designed to have cooling. Choosing to run it without the fan is reckless, heat kills electronics.
I hate to admit I was wrong but it does in fact matter which way the polarity is connected to the fan. Having been a shade tree mechanic for a couple of days, my experience was that a dc motor would simply run in reverse. Good thing I don't make a living being a grease monkey anymore! Found the problem! The second fan motor from open build did not compute! Went to my local computer store and purchased another fan from them, plugged it into the box (correctly) and voila!, I felt a small gust of air. Put the black box completely back together and tested the fan. It works!! Appreciate the expert help. Lord knows I can't even spell expert much less be one. Thanks a bunch. Now, where did I put that ball-peen hammer...
Most likely, I screwed the pooch with the second fan. I must have reversed polarity and fried it. This build is going to be a huge learning experience for this country boy. Well, got to go feed the chickens and slop the hogs. Or is it feed the hogs and slop the chickens? I get so confused...
Awesome, and glad you are sorted Had to ask, as if you really didnt, my next step wouldve had you measure voltage on the fan header (; so luckily we dont need to go there. Glad your PC shop had 24v fans? PC stuff is usually 12v
Yeppers, that is why I bought a third fan. (24.3 volts) I was surprised that they had 24v fans as well. The Lord was smiling at my incompetence and gave me a helping hand. My Kimber 45 may have added some impetus to the store employee...
Will add that to my "want" list for Amazon. My wife tells me we should own stock in Amazon...we pay a lot of salaries there!
Just wanted to thank everyone on the OpenBuilds team for all the support I have received. My biggest failure was not researching the machine and its controls. As a result, I had a lot of unnecessary questions that led to a high level of self-induced frustration. I then managed to pass on that frustration to the people who were helping me. So I am having a similar problem. I powered up my blackbox and everything seems to work fine other then the cooling fan. I took the top off of it and verified that I had it hooked up correctly. The fan polarity was correct. I contacted the parts store and they sent me a new fan but that one doesn't work either. I am a little slow but my thought was to check the fan leads for voltage with my multi-meter I first checked the voltage coming out of the power supply to just verify that I have 24v. Everything looked good there had 24.22v. I then proceeded to check the fan leads and I do not have voltage. Is there anything other then it just being bad that would cause this?
So no power on the fan header pins? They connect directly to the PSU rails, along with motor drivers and switchmode PSU. So does the drivers work, does the RGB led on top board light up, etc?
The RGB light is on and all the drivers work. You can jog it around. All the limit switches work. No power to the fan pins that is correct.
Ok so I think I was wrong. There is a green LED that lights up right beside the RGB markings on the PCB. I do not have RGB lights that light up. Is this what you mean?
Right next to the tiny 5VOK led is a large white RGB LED: see OpenBuilds BlackBox 4X Documentation If that LED is off and fan isnt getting power, its most likely power supply wiring related. But then the drivers wouldnt work... So something is off on the explanation. Didnt bend any pins when connecting the brains to the Muscle?
I don't think i bent anything. I will take it apart and verify that all the pins are good between the two boards.
Sounds like a plan, as 24v appears to be present on the Muscle board, as you say motors do run It runs up to upper board through pin labelled VM. And from there to the fan header. Nothing in between.
I took the blackbox apart remove the board from the pins and inspected everything and no bent pins. I re-seated the board and put the blackbox back together. Unfortunately it is acting exactly the same. I took the power supply apart and verified all of the connections there as well, I was getting 24v but just wanted to cover all my bases. Everything was good there as well. Hmm wonder what I am missing. I should get 24v to the fan header pins correct?
I took everything apart again and I don't see anything burnt/blackish. The solder looks fine for the fan pin headers. Nothing loose. The only thing that was odd was that looking at the row of pins where the lower and upper boards connect. The 4th pin in on the top board is labeled 0-10V and the 4th pin on the lower board is labeled MOSFET. Thanks for all your help Peter.

@Peter Van Der Walt I wanted to give a update on this. I put my BlackBox back together this morning with the replacement boards. Everything works now the Fans and the LED light for the logo. I think Axis movement is better as well. It seams like the rapid is faster and more precise (For a lack of a better word). So I am thinking there was some issue with drivers as well I just didn't know exactly how it was to act. Anyway thanks for all your help in getting this going. My new Lead 1010 is ready to use so I better do a little playing and see what it can do
