Will 6mm ID x 8mm OD Flexible Silicone Rubber Tubing work with distilled water for cooling spindle motor? It seems to kink easily. I am running it through the Flexible Drag Chains. I see that some sites recommend adding adding anti freeze. Is this common practice or is it just for color? The coolant pump has a 5mm opening.
Silicone is lovely for tubing and wiring, but with only a 1mm wall thickness, it is guaranteed to kink. It's flexibility is a double edged sword. What comes with the spindle is a much harder material. I believe it's either PTFE or nylon. Either of those can get away with a much thinner wall thickness than silicone. Antifreeze is to inhibit bacterial growth that WILL cause issues down the road.
Look for a deal on tygon tubing. That's what I use. It's a bit on the pricy side, but it runs perfect in a drag chain.. For algae and mold you can use a silver kill coil. Look them up on Amazon. Just stick it right in line with the flow.
Joe Santarsiero Hi Joe. That Silver Kill Coil, any chance it would work on a pond filter without killing the fish??
I don't know. I wouldn't think so. Let me know if you learn something about it though. It's supposed to released silver ions into the water which are antimicrobial. I don't know what effect they would have on fish if any.
