    Hey guys :)
A quick heads up to let you know that the MiniMill videos have been updated to show the all new Build as well as the new super clean wiring with the all new OpenBuilds limit switches installed! Props go out to @Matthew Bates for the awesome job on the videos.
    Thank you

Click the Build tab above (ie the MiniMill Build Page), scroll down to the Videos section. Good luck!

What's the minimum amps required from a 24V power supply to run the mini mill with the hi torque nema 23 motors?

Is it possible to have this machine with worksize 200x200mm or 250x200mm?

It's only limited by your imagination. You can find other threads here of people who have customized their mini mills. Probably one of the most popular is Scotty Orr's mini mill XL conversion. It gives you a work area much larger than the stock mini mill. MMXL - A MiniMill Conversion

    Thanks :D

    EDIT:
just checked the link..it will be too much work...since my skills are rather low :D haha
ANyway..but it must be possible just to extend X and Y axis a bit?
In my head I just need to get longer 8mm Metric lead screws and C-Beam Rails. All other parts will fit :D Extends this by a inch or 2 then it will cover my needs :D

is this correct ? or I am way off ? TIA

X yes, Y no. X is as simple as ordering a 500mm C-beam and a matching screw. Y is limited by the throat depth between the router bit and the rear column. So making the axis longer really does nothing to increase the capacity. Increasing the throat depth by building out the upper assembly with some extra plates is possible but it leads to more flex in the rear column and thus reduces the quality of the output. When you start trying to stiffen the column, you realize you've created a monster...

We tested my build, and found that the Z axis was not engaging the limit switch in time to prevent crashing. The solution was to attach a little pad of neoprene to the bracket, nice and clean, and that it that. It's my seventh machine build, the first six being some cranky and delicate robot arms. This was more fun, for sure. pad for mini mill.jpg

Was just wondering, is it possible to use a smaller Z-plate to win some machining height? Perhaps something with wheels on the in- and outside to increase stiffness?

The Cbeam XL gantry plate is a fairly simple drop in. You also have a machine fully capable of machining whatever suits your needs. The only issue with the inside wheels is that they conflict with the lock collar on the lead screw which reduces usable distance.

I've decided to add a Cbeam XL gantry plate :) Now for ordering and finishing up. I saw they're used on the LEAD, C-Beam,... machines, so it would seem to be stiff enough. Should also give me some more Z-working height without greatly reducing stiffness of the column

Whilst building the minimill (or rather the enclosure it's going to sit in) after I've mounted the mill to a thick steel slab, I noticed one wheel on the Y-gantry plate seems out of allignment causing the whole X-axis to wobble about 0.5mm. Anyone know any (quick) solution for this? Not yet looking to get into linear rails as I'd like to cut the plates for them myself :)

Ok, thanks, hadn't gotten that far yet, I was planning on using Repetier firmware because I already have several ramps boards and I'm using as a 3dprinter. I'll download the app and get the settings. Thanks, Matthew

    Go to OpenBuilds MiniMill
Scroll down about halfway to "Video Build of the Minimill: Jump in and when you complete this easy step by step build-along video you will have an awesome 3 Axis CNC Mini Mill for your Desktop"
Click the Play button on the video and follow along step by step

I almost finished my build of MiniMill with few tweaks made by me. Should be a little bit more solid. 0.8kw router with VFD a2. Box with electronic fully designed by me and 3d printed.
