I'll have to hunt down the post (as we dont officially support VFDs) but there was a user on here with the same thing a while back, Will edit this post when I see it

DRO showing "disabled" that's a new one! I've never seen that! We just parse the Grbl response to '?' and read out the fields, so suspecting you have some custom build of Grbl where the result string from '?' contains the words disabled at some field where we expect the position data? Installing an official build of Grbl will very probably resolve that one: OpenBuildsCONTROL > Wizards and Tools > Grbl Flashing Tool will do the job :)

I got the 6000 RPM issue resolved. Following another post said to set PD011 to 100 (minimum RPM). Setting it to 0 and all is good.

I uninstalled the latest build and went back to 1.0.185 and everything is back to normal.

Just a thought. A very nice addition to the lead machine build would be an extension or riser plate that can be added to the c-beam end plates to add the two extra bolt holes for mounting the stepper motor on all 4 corners. Can maybe be sold as an add-on kit to the c-beam end plates. Just a suggestion.

I'll add a second enthusiastic vote for offering 4-hole end plates as an option - it's something that's been on my wishlist ever since building my Lead.

I've got some anti-vibration mounts from a previous build that I'd really love to use on the Lead to keep the extrusions from amplifying the stepper noise quite so much (and keep me from worrying about imaginary resonance gremlins), but they rely on having four-corner mounting points (fine, technically it needs two opposing sets of diagonal corners - similar to this - but it amounts to the same).

Right now I'm looking at grabbing some aluminum and cutting my own replacement plates (because machines that can make parts for themselves are awesome), but they won't look nearly as pretty as the OB ones. I still haven't quite gotten the hang of anodizing - although it something I keep meaning to take another shot at.

(I was terribly disappointed when I read the first articles about the RepRap and discovered that it couldn't build copies of itself. I was really looking forward to the self-assembling apocalypse)

Has anyone had issues with the Dewalt power lead running parallel with stepper and endstop wiring? Interested before I rip into this. Thanks - Brad

Running mains near Limit switch wiring is not advisable - if you have the option, bringing power for the router down from the ceiling above the machine is a great way of keeping the power cord away from low voltage wiring

Hi Brad, I personally have not had any issues with doing it this way with the machines we have put together but it's a tricky one. What limits are you using? I ask because the Xtension Limit Switches have the onboard RC noise filter to prevent false triggers. It may not work in all situations but it's a good start. Like @Peter Van Der Walt states if your able your better off running them seperate from the start to avoid any potential problems.

Yeah... what I suspected. I'm designing an enclosure. Adding cable mgmt should be easy?

Good to know. I'm using Xtension limit switches. Might try both :) Thanks!

I designed these on my 3D printer for my LEAD that I am building. The only change since this video is a recessed square for the jam\lock nut to avoid a 2 tool tightening operation.

    Hi there,
Many thanks to all the pros who help us newbies. I got G Wizard and am trying to configure it. I've got a lead 1010 with the high z mod. I need help with these numbers... (some of these autopopulated so I know they aren't correct).
    cheers

Just got ours built and am having some trouble with aluminum. Has anyone tried using a rheostat on the dewalt router to further slow down the rpm? If so...would you say YAY or NAY?

Rheostats really don't slow an AC motor down they merely starve it for power. Combine that with a speed controlled motor and nothing good will come of it. My question is what bit are you using?

    HI Rick,

I'm using an 1/8" carbide 2-flute bit. I've used them on aluminum successfully with a much lower rpm motor...but these guys keep rounding down on me. I was thinking about looking into the makita router that can go as low as 10Krpm, but I fear that may still be too fast.

Have you tried a single flute? That is what I have used at about 18000 rpms.

Sorry for the late reply. I have been using cheap single flute endmills that come in a 10 pack because I was trying to figure out my feeds and speeds. I have found that it seems easier with a 1/4 inch but I can't use them for everything for obvious reasons. Have a look at this thread. There is good info here with regards to aluminum. Is there a good checklist out there of what maintenance should be done after a big job? Tramming? Making sure machine is square? What else am I missing? Any preferred way of doing all this? Cheers

In the video, did I miss how to install the cable tray (20x20) part that runs along the gantry for the cable chain to sit on? What am I supposed to be using?
Edit, Never mind, I found it. It's circa 1hr 25min

    Hi all,

I've been following this great little CNC for a quite a while now and been gathering parts to make it one day.
Through my quest for parts I came across many kits and parts from the East, but in all cases, Openbuilds was clearly mentioned as the designer/creator of this machine.

Until yesterday I run into this UNBELIEVABLE guy. He has even inserted watermarks with his company logo in the original openbuilds photos. He even copy-pasted the text replacing the Openbuilds with his name:

".... The Lead CNC Machine is the result of years of experience, feedback, and suggestions, and through rigorous beta testing and staying true to the modular nature of YuYong 3DMaker Linear Rail system."

I did not want to put a link here, you can find it yourself in the aliexpress....

I was really annoyed and angry!
How do you guys deal with those copycats? Surely they can not be left like that!!!

Has anyone built any solid plates that can utilize linear rails or wheels for the xy gantry plates so you don’t have to use the two separate plates with wheels with the attached vslot rail? I hope my terminology is correct, just getting back into this. Any new thoughts or plans/designs on a more solid or stiffer design for xyz axis beams?
Just curious if anyone has experimented with anything that would make machine more rigid. Or would adding the additional wheels suffice?

Is there another area on forum that has just upgrades to existing kits or am I in the right place?

Most people document their modifications to a CNC routers here in the CNC router section of this forum if they choose to document it in the "Builds" section.

I am in the process of doing a linear rail build with a Lead High Z kit plus a whole lot of other components I purchased recently from OpenBuilds to basically convert my self-designed take on the Ox (except with lead screws) and convert it to a LEAD running on linear rails that has adjustability - 2 positions high and low - in the x gantry. There are several people that have done it with the Workbee. The rest of my parts are coming today from OpenBuilds and my plan was to do a build log as I go, but that hasn't happened yet due to lack of time. I am almost done cutting the aluminum plates and to be honest, it has done so well, I am second guessing my decision to modify it. However, I already bought everything so onward I go.

What exactly are you trying to cut with it that it needs to be stiffer? The reason I ask is I have seen much lesser machines plow through aluminum by using the proper tool paths such as trichoidal milling.
