Huanyang VFD / Spindle won't spin past 200hz.

    I'm pulling my hair out and need Help. My Huanyang VFD HY01D511B won't spin past 200Hz. It seems to make no difference if I control with my blackbox or from the front of the VFD. All I have changed to cause this problem was moving the VFD into an old PC case to help shield the EMI from my blackbox. I've done a PD013=8 to factory reset it, then I've set:

    PD001=0 front of VFD or 1 from blackbox

    PD002=1

    PD003=0 or 400 makes no difference

    PD004=400

    PD005=400

    PD008=110 (I have a 110v VFD and Spindle - in USA)

    PD070=0 (1-10V)

    PD071=20 (factory)

    PD072=400

    PD141=110

    PD142=7

    PD143=4 or 2, makes no difference

    PD144=3000 (changing up to 5000 made no difference either), I think this just sets what it shows on the RPM.

    Can someone tell me what I am missing? I saw someone else had this exact issue in another thread, but there was no response since December on what the resolution was.

    Did you watch this video from ThePaintballGuy? His settings are in the description, your settings look close to his


    Also I've read that you need to do some settings in a particular order.

    What motor do you have? Pic of the plate?

    I emailed the Inverter Company Huanyang and they suggested switching PD070 to 1, (0-5 volts) for the input, and I was able to get back to 400 HZ. Something is still strange though. Before this happened I could do an M3 S23000 and I would get 23000 rpm, or about 393ish HZ. Now anything I call for over 21000rpm gives me 400HZ. It's like setting PD070 to 0 (0-10V) doesn't let me get much past 300HZ with the POTS screw adjustment maxed out on the blackbox, and PD070 set to 1 (0-5volts) at least lets me get to max RPM (400HZ).

    Does the Blackbox indeed output 0-10v via the toolhead pins? I did put a Ferrite metal noise reducer thing on the lines coming from the blackbox toolhead output to control the VFD, could this reduce the 10v to like 8volts or something? The video above doesn't mention setting PD006 to 3.0 vs factory 2.5, but from what I can see in the manual, if you have 60hz electricity you should set it to 3.0.

    Did you move the jumper on the VFD to V1?

    I don't know which spindle you're using (or how much of a difference that might make), but I've got the same VFD - I've been using it for a year or so with the onboard controls & was just in the process of wiring it to a BlackBox. For what it's worth, your settings look the same as what I've been (more or less) successfully running with, but I'll do a dump of them anyhow, on the off chance there's anything useful in there.

    I wasn't in the mood for re-entering absolutely everything today, so rather than working from a fresh pd013 reset, these are just my settings that differ from the (supposed) default values described claimed in the manual - there are a bunch that're (probably) completely irrelevant and/or may already default to the same value on yours :

    Jumper J1 = VR
    pd001 = 0
    pd002 = 1
    pd003 = 400 (probably default)
    pd008 = 110 (probably default)
    pd009 = 14 (I don't entirely understand this & 010, so I suspect they were model-specific defaults)
    pd010 = 7
    pd041 = 08 (probably default)
    pd053 = 0 (which apparently controls terminals that don't even seem to exist on this model)
    pd070 = 1
    pd072 = 400
    pd079 = 1 ("Reserved", so almost certainly unrelated)
    pd142 = 7 (the motor's got an 8A nameplate, but the setting won't go over 7)
    pd144 = 3000
    pd176 = 0 (this is the default, and can't be changed, but is worth mentioning anyhow, because in most of the world a 110V unit should be using 1 = 60hz, not 0=50hz).

    (I've also tweaked a lot of the acceleration/braking params, but those shouldn't be related and I've never been very happy with the results, so I wouldn't really want anyone else thinking they were worth copying)

    I'm still testing out the BlackBox setup, but right now the only changes from the above are:
    Jumper J1 = VI
    pd001 = 1
    pd002 = 0
    pd070 = 0

    The recommendations I keep seeing for pd070 & pd144 are 1 & 3000 (respectively), but I'm puzzled by why 070 would be 1 (0-5V) instead of 0 (the 0-10V the BB actually puts out), and in my experience it ran the spindle around twice the intended speed.

    With regard to your 200/400Hz experience, it's probably also worth mentioning that 070/144 together determine what RPM the display will show for a given value of M3 from the BlackBox, and can be combined to give some pretty confusing results. For instance, I found that with pd070=1 + pd144=1500 the display will match the M3 S# (at least until it caps out around 12000), but, as above, the actual spindle speed will be about double what it should.

    I've never touched pd006 - mine's still at the default 2.5 - so it's probably not causing your problem, but it might be worth doing a little more research on once everything else is running. I also keep meaning to look into the related pd041 ("Carrier Frequency"), as the manual mentions the potential for increasing or decreasing noise & interference, and I've noticed the VFD tends to broadcast like that one weird talk radio station from the opposite coast that keeps cutting in whenever you try listening to anything else. Except with slightly less people calling in about aliens and significantly more chance of crashing random electronics.

    Also, as @juansierra mentioned, getting the jumper setting right is essential... but (and I tested it earlier) it'll either make your controls work or not work. I didn't see any way for it to just sort of work, but strangle the speeds in the way you're seeing.
