So my Z-axis was not homing and after searching I read to flash a different version .grbl then flash back to 1.1f regular version. It looks like I have the acro version as my Z- wont home.
I tried to flash as it is on my control software but it failed. I have the latest version of the control software.

How do I get the drop down menu to select which .grbl to flash? @Peter Van Der Walt

The dropdowns on your screenshot does it.
Acro version: refer to gnea/grbl (we just did that section for you in the Acro build)

So select 3 Axes, and away you go

Not sure of the back and forth thing but sounds like nonsense.

    1) drivers correct
    2) autoreser jumper in place
    3) try flash twice if first time fails (autoreset is kinda time sensitive and doesnt always reset first time

Controller not responding. Machine doesn't move even with updated $$ settings. Every upload now failed. What auto reset jumper? Getting really tired of this. Last time I tried to update from 0.9j to 1.1 the controller bricked, sent it back to spark, took longer than necessary then lost for a while...
    What's the deal?

I take it you forgot to select xPro from the list of controllers then?

If yes you forgot: xPro Bootloader corrupt. How to reflash? Keywords: atmega328pb vs atmega328p, usbtiny, Arduino

If not, maybe that xPro was already a bit dead causing the z issues and flashing issues. Order a BlackBox as a good replacement: docs.openbuilds.com/blackbox for more info

I selected all the correct drop downs. No reason why I should need to upgrade controllers. This works for everyone else with a V3. My control box and wiring is all custom for the V3.
    Any other ideas?

Resetting the controller allowed me to input the correct $$ values and now the machine works as it did. However it is still showing grbl 1.1f and still not homing the Z-axis. The uploader in openbuilds control software says failed every time. Including flashing different machine types. I tried to use Audrino uploader with the Poulo star PB driver and that also fails. Running a Gcode file has the Z-axis crashing into the stock when moving. This is ridiculous.

Did you even flash the Acro / 2 axes version at some point. Why?

The flashing tool should work, so not sure what's different about yours. I see you sent it to Mike at some point so i guess we can assume he flashed Grbl over ISP and the board doesnt have a bootloader. Take it up with him please as there is prior history.

It must have come flashed with the acro 1.1f. It had never worked on any flash tool combo, had a chip replaced and was sent back as is and returned loaded with 1.1f. I wired it back up, mounted it and changed all the $$ settings and found the z-home not working. Then discovered the acro version. It has got to be the problem. I've disassembled the controller and will ne sending it back again.

Extremely unlikely that Mike would have flashed that for you!

What about z homing doesnt work.

Well why else would it not home or not move during repositioning? I click home and X and Y home properly. Z does not move. During jobs the Z will not retract during moves, crashes into stock. What else could it be?

How can I tell which grbl file is correct from the github page? I cant tell which one is the "we did this for you acro" version. That is not the one I want. Just the regular 1.1f

    Acro version just affects homing
Like i said, if you didnt load it STOP focussing on it. Its not on your board unless YOU installed it! And you say you did not so lets move on shall we...

    Onwards:

If z doesnt move at all then its more likely wiring, or a damaged driver.

Check wiring. It should move when jogged.

If not, probably fried a driver. Replace board then

The wiring is the same as it was before and photo verified. The z jogs up and down and reports correct movement and can probe but wont home or retract up during moves and is accurate.

Well, if you read this: (follow the link, go actually read the wiki attentively)

    You'd understand why
is clearly not related - and rather showing a hardware issue. Drivers die especially if you ever move an axis by hand, PSU surges, wiring suddenly disconnected, it takes just a little abuse to kill one. Being to weak to lift up your Z sounds like hardware to man

It's not weak to lift the Z. The Z jogs up and down all day long. It's not wiring.
