Beginner "odin" The Norse God

Rating:
5/5,
  • Software:
    Vectric V-Carve, bCNC
    Machine Time:
Actual carve time, around 14 hours. Build time, 20+ hours
    Bit or Laser Size:
1/4" end mill, 1/8" ball nose end mill
    Feeds & Speeds:
    118 IPM/ 104 IPM Roughing & Finish passes
    Materials:
A big, thick plank of unknown species hard wood. Possibly Beech? Minwax PolyShades Classic Oak & Polyurethane All in one.
This one started off with a 4" thick plank of wood of unknown species, re-sawn on my bandsaw, and thickness planed to 1.35" and glued up for this project. I was asked by a friend, who is of Viking lineage, to make him something special for his son. So I, of course, said yes and I thought I would share the build with you all.

There is not a whole lot to explain with this one, so I made a little slide show to show the progression of it instead. I did end up re-running the finish pass on this one because a day went by between the roughing pass, and part of the finish pass. Wood is very susceptible to warping, swelling, twisting and contracting due to mixed temperatures, and humidity levels. Stopping between cuts for any length of time will give you inconsistencies in your final results. Take it from me.

The finished project is 20" x 20" I also made a 1" boxed frame on the back side to keep it from warping and cracking. It makes it easier to hang on the wall, and adds even more depth to the overall appearance.

Anyhow....Hope you enjoy the show! Click the link below.
