A 3D carved Dragon Frame I did recently on the Lead 1010 machine. The model was picked up on Etsy found here: 3d STL Model for CNC Router Engraver Carving Machine Relief Artcam Aspire "gorgeous picture frame" I know this file can be found for free in some forums on the web, but Please try to support the model creators if you can.

I am not going to go into details on this project, as I have already done so on my other projects posted here. The same methods apply to this carving. Check them out if you need help with model/ toolpath setup.

Here is my canvas laid out, ready to be transformed into art.

Using a 1/4" downcut end mill bit, I begin the roughing pass.

Once that completes, I swap out bits to my 1/8" ballnose end mill, reset my Z zero and run the finish pass.

    IMG_20190505_192713713.jpg

Swap out bits again after the finish pass to an 1/8" straight cut end mill for the cutout/ profile tool path. Remember to set your Z after any bit change!!

I then added a coat of Formby's Tung Oil Finish.

    With Finish.jpg

I would like to add a mirror, or at least some kind of reflective backing to it, someday............

(NOTE) I really should have ran a 2mm tapered ball end on this. It would have left a ton more detail in the finish pass, but would also add multiple hours to the project. :(:(

Hope you all like this project. :)

I make a point to purchase designs from creators if at all possible - BUT - not being able to open a file without first learning new protocols and software AFTER the purchase makes me less inclined. Opening this file (still not open or useable) after paying for it makes me a bit upset. It is a fabulous design that I purchased and I would love to cut.

Perhaps the designer will someday just post the STL, CVR, DXF or ABC whatever file that will just work.

Did it come as a .zip or .7z or .rar file? These can easily be opened with a free program called 7zip. Hope that helps.

    Absolutely fabulous..well done.
In fact I was looking at this exact model the other day.
Can you give me the Timber size and thickness used and the size of the finished model?
    Love it! Thanks for posting...
On reply, I will purchase this model from the proper source.

      Thank you. The wood was approximately 1.4" x 11" x 22"
The finished model is 1.1 x 11 x17 to maintain the aspect ratio. If I would have glued up a bit wider piece of wood, I could have utilized the whole thickness and length of the lumber. Could have been 1.4' x 14' x 22' A 1" thick piece would end up as 1" x 10" x 15.8" Hope that helps.

Cheers Jack for the prompt reply, I have just purchased the model from the same source as you quoted. Now I need to find a nice piece of dark hardwood and hopefully, I can replicate your efforts. I ran a trial setup toolpath through Vectric software and your quite right in saying that a smaller bit seems to give more definition but at a price (time). Thanks again

Thank you Sir! I just love the 3D carvings. The Lead 1010 has not missed a single step anywhere. That's impressive!
