Scan someone's head in 3D with an iPhone and then CNC machine a wooden sculpture with the DeskProto 3D CAM software.

In order to CNC machine a sculpture of a living person you need to first obtain a 3D scan of that person. So far that has not been easy, as not many people have a 3D scanner. We found that this is no longer true: all recent iPhones are equipped with a 3D scanner: its Face ID feature.

This video shows how to scan a head, using the EM3D app from the Apple App Store. Next it shows how to create toolpaths for a 4-axis CNC milling machine, using the DeskProto 3D CAM software. Next the milling process is shown: rotary toolpaths in maple wood, and finally the resulting bust sculpture.

Rotation axis machining is possible only in the Multi-Axis edition of DeskProto.
Subtitles are available and can be switched on, in English and in Dutch.
