So I wanted to see how well MDF would carve being that it is soft and stable perhaps leading to faster but better detail on some pieces.
- Machine Type:
- OpenBuilds WorkBee
- Electronics:
- OpenBuilds BlackBox
- Machine Time:
- 3hrs
- Bit or Laser Size:
- .624 tapered ?
- Feeds & Speeds:
- 60/30
- Materials:
- MDF, Rust-Oleum and Acrylic
My results with the carving turned out quite well but I should have either made this bigger or not as high.
As a result the skulls did not come out as well as I would have liked but I compensated with a little paint to bring out the highlights.
I tried to seal the MDF with an Acrylic Clear first but it just kept soaking in and would not seal properly.
I decided to use what I had on hand and used the Rust-Oleum. It sealed it in 3 coats. Not what I wanted to use but since this was only a test I didn’t want to use my Auto Air Products.
Lesson learned though. I will use a white sealer next time with a fast set time.
I used Acrylics and detail brushes to complete the project. It took a couple days but didn’t turn out tool bad.
I ended up giving it to a business that had done some work on my bike a while back for free and the owner cried. I said I did it out of appreciation nothing more.
Enjoy,
Randy
