This beautiful picture frame is a great project to start with 3D CNC machining.
The geometry is an STL file, which is one of the free sample files that is present in every download of the DeskProto CAM software. The tutorial video (the video link shown below) uses the DeskProto software to create the CNC toolpaths: simple 3-axis machining, from one side. It is easy to change the size of the frame to fit any photo that you have.
The video shows how to use the wizard in DeskProto to create the toolpaths, how to fine-tune the wizard's settings, how to fixture the material on the machine, the actual machining (in red cedar wood), and the result.
