I have ordered 1500mm of c beam for all axis's and plan to use the openbuilds lead screws to drive my gantry. my question is, if I connect the lead screw with bearing/thrust bearing/lock collar on the motor side and bearing/thrust bearing/ tension nut on the other end of the c beam. will I need anti backlash nuts on the gantry trolley still? or is the tensioning enough?
Two different issues. The first part you refer to is relative to looseness of the screw in the axis channel. The latter is relative to the looseness of the gantry connection to the screw. Backlash can happen in either of these so yes you need to be sure backlash is taken care of in both areas.
Thank you for responding, I noticed in the video on the 1515 build the assembly only had nut blocks driving the gantry from the back and forth on y. this is basically the machine I'm building and wanna clarify so I can order the correct stuff for the assembly of the x and y travel for the leads.
my confusion is based on the build video list of parts, I see nothing for backlash on the leads. any help would be appreciated.
Sorry, I haven't built a 1515 so wasn't fully aware of the situation. Using the opposing nut blocks like that serves the same purpose as a single anti-backlash nut. You just need to make sure that the when you tighten the second of the two it is held inward, tightening the pair against the screw so there is no play. Note: you do not need extreme force on this, just make it snug enough to prevent play on the screw.
