I'm new here and have been going slow. It was going well then I hit a wall. I have an Arduino uno with a CNC Shield, 8825 drivers and a combination of NEMA17 and NEMA23 motors and am using UGS sender. I tested all my drivers individually. I then installed my y and z axis, both single NEMA23 motors. Did some tests and everything worked well. I disconnected power. Then I installed my x axis motors, two NEMA17 hooked up to individual cloned drivers. The last movement of the machine came when I sent a small jog command to the x axis. It shuddered, I think it moved but I lower the jog distance so I can't say for sure. Then everything stopped. I have not been able to get anything to move since and I'm not even sure where to start trouble shooting. My first basic question that I still could not find an answer to after 4 hours of searching is Can you use NEMA23 and NEMA17 motors off the same board with different drivers. Question two any ideas on where to start troubleshooting?
Yes, you can have different size motors. You'll just need to adjust the pots differently for the different loads. As for troubleshooting, I'd probably just start over with another $21 board. You're probably going to wind up there anyway. Beyond that a little more information would be helpful. Power supply, drive method, overall size, etc.
Thanks for the confirmation on the motors. I was pretty sure it should be possible but could not find a clear, definitive, answer. I did order another board and some stepper drivers. Hopefully that will allow me to do some trouble shooting or at least get back to where I was. Most importantly is I don't want to repeat the same mistake, whatever it was. I'll let you know what I find, if anything and post some more detailed information this weekend. Thanks again.
Figured it out, sort of. I got a new kit and still nothing. no errors even. Did some more checking and the power supply that I was using for the motors is dead. I guess that is going back. I haven't done any trouble shooting on the old stuff other than to test it as a set as it was. It still does not work. Not sure I want to mix and match the new and old on fear it will damage the new and i'll be set back another week. Thanks for your help, I'm sure I'll be back.
After a long delay I got back to putting it together. In an even more meticulous and slow assembly and testing process i verified Y axis worked Z axis worked Y and Z axis worked together X1 and Y and Z axis worked together X1 and X2 axis worked together When all axis were connected Y axis moved Z axis moved X axis stopped, then nothing else moved Same as before. Not sure what to think about the power supply, I don't believe in coincidences. I did find this though, has anyone else heard of this?
