Hi all, newbie here. Ive decided to dive in and enter the cnc world. Got tons of experience in 3d, but just deciding on what to build.

I was all set on a quenbe pro, then a few days ago i saw the black bee, and really like the look of it.

Given its quite beastly, i want to get powerful steppers, so i am not holding it back, and would like to avoid regular upgrades (ha!)

My concern however, is, i see people talking about running steppers at 48,60, even 70v+ to get the most out of them.

The blackbox i was set on, only does 24v at 4a peak.

Will it be sufficient for the blackbee, or would a higher voltage setup be more appropriate?

in the end, i want decent quality cuts in mostly plywood, plastic, aluminium.. I might try some mild steel if the machine seems up to it, and the need arises. Im not after blazing production speed, although who knows in the future.

    Any advice most appreciated.

24v is fine. Our motors have 3v coils, 24v is plenty overhead. Modern chopper drivers are not as inefficient as the first generation bipolar drivers were, you don't need that high voltage anymore

Ok, so, the "high torque" steppers seem permanently out of stock (last few weeks) at the open builds italy website.

Looking at at affordable alternatives, these seem well priced, and rated even higher torque:

    Free Ship! 3PC Nema23 Schrittmotor Stepper Motor 435oz.in 3N.M 4.2A 23HS9442 CNC | eBay

However i note they have a slightly higher voltage rating of 3.78v per winding. I assume this means they would ideally like a higher voltage driver? Do these steppers seem a good choice for a blackbox/blackbee system, or should i be looking only for stuff with a voltage nearer the 3v ones you stock...?

3v+-. Voltage on those are fine but that 3.8mH Inductance rating will mean they are slow on the top speed side. Selfbraking from high Back-EMF. Will suffice for a Z axis motor.

Our motors datasheets are in the picture gallery on the store. Find as-near as you can for optimal performance. We dialed in the specs on ours for the Premium OpenBuilds Experience. Deviate from the specs, and it may work just fine depending on your needs, but it will be just less than optimal.

Its a balance game. All that torque, for what? Snapping bits long before you use all of it. Balance out. Acceleration, top speed, torque, etc. Bigger isn't always better. Our regular NEMa23s run faster than the High Torques. Depends all on what you are building, what you are expecting.

Thanks Peter, ive been looking at high torque steppers due to the "blackbee" being rather more heavily built than the workbee or LEAD. I just assumed i would be looking at high torque motors to avoid missed steps shifting that chunky gantry and (probably) heavy chinese spindle about. Given my lack of knowledge it may well be that normal steppers are absolutely fine for this setup..

Happy to purchase the recommended steppers, but in Italy there doesnt seem to be much stock about. Ill see if i can find something that matches the spec of yours closer, although i assume that being within 0.2v and 0.2mh of your spec, it might be hard to find a closer match than those (they are also about half the price, but thats another story, there may be very good reasons why ;)

Anyway, early days, maybe the store here will get more stock.
