I sent a support ticket about this but thought it may also be of help here in case it happens to someone else.

My BB32 had a puff of smoke come out the left-front side near around the power switch. I had everything at a point where all axes were moving, limit switches triggering, coolant/LED ring, signal to VFD turns on spindle. Everything working initially, it was great. So then it's time to plug in the Interface and that's when the smoke happened.

I did not hook the RJ12 cable directly from the Interface to the BB32. What I had done is put everything into an ATX case for protection, and in doing so added through-ports on the case to plug cables in from the outside. The RJ cable I ordered online goes from the BB32 to my ATX thru-port, and then the OpenBuilds RJ12 cable goes from that port to the Interface.

I noticed after the smoke that visually checking and testing continuity showed the connector orientation is reversed from one end to the other on the Openbuilds RJ12. Mine had the connectors going the same direction the whole way through. I actually just noticed it's RJ11, but upon investigation same thing regarding this situation. I likely inadvertently revered the voltage by doing this, but could that have accidentally caused internal damage from that particular port, even if at 5v? What a shame as I wasn't trying to circumvent their cable. I used it but needed two and thought they would be the same and I was wrong, a silly and hopefully not a costly mistake.

So the present behavior now is:

BB32 - Turns On, USB works, all coms work (correct in/out signals) The fan though is 100% off. This model has a blue illuminated fan. For some reason there appears to be an unrelated blue status LED on the PCB near enough so you think you're getting partial voltage to the fan, but that's not the case. Also noticed there is a 5V LED on the underside of the driver board and that also is off.

Interface- Even after the problem I was still able to keep moving and updated the firmware. So I assume the interface is okay. It boots green all the way up to the end but then cannot connect to the BB32 (yes USB is not connected). Still using a PC & Openbuilds to test everything.

Machine (motors) - They seem to try to work. LED icon for motors engaged is on. All axis before were tight and immoveable by hand when energized. Now the Y axis can move with no resistance. The X is tight and engaged both ways. And the Z is half-working I can only feel resistance in one direction. I hear the hissing so still some juice is getting to them, but if I push a jog direction I get a quick, micro-small movement and then it stops, as if a discharging capacitor was powering it. All the while motors are enabled on LED.

Sorry if that's a weird one, trying to keep things interesting for you ! Thank you for reading I know lengthy.
