Hello, I have NEMA 23 stepper motors connected to TB6600 motor drivers. I am using an Arduino to control the drivers. Sometimes I manually need to rotate the motors, can this generate back emf and damage my Arduino? Does the optocoupler isolation in the driver take care of the back emf? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
As far as I can tell from the link you provided the opto-couplers protect the signal inputs to the stepper driver (step, dir) from emi. I don't see how they could protect the output stages of the stepper driver from back emf, so my advice would always be to disconnect the motors (power off first) from the driver before turning the motors by hand. Alex.
a stepper motor can easily generate more volts than your power supply outputs when you turn it by hand. so disconnect the motor, or turn very very slowly
