you need to make sure that when you command the X and Y to go a certain distance, that they actually go exactly that distance.
    so if you do
    G91 G21 X50
then X should move the tool exactly 50mm to the right.
    G91 G21 Y50
will do it for the Y axis.

Now, if the movements are not exact, you need to calibrate:

(you may need to reload that page to get it to jump to the correct post)

    Greetings all
As I was fine tuning the cnc I dicovered the one stepper motor is defective. That would be the reason for the bad circle and calibration. My question is should I replace all three or just the one?

    Hey Doug,
If only one is bad then why replace all three? How did you verify the motor is bad?

    Greetings all
The past few days have been great the cnc is running accurately and now I am looking for a good cam program to turn my dxf files into g code. Any suggestions from the forum.

To fix my machine I started at the beginning making sure the table was square, replacing two stepper motors and setting the machine up in inches and not mm. Once all that was done I was able to cut a 4 inch circle out of metal and other gcode files that uses pockets and squares. I also made a small vacuum table to hold the pc I made it with the cnc. Just today I bought a mach3 license and looking for a good cam program to convert my dxf files into gcode.
Thanks for the input. I will post videos later to youtube.

Estlcam is a good and easy to use cam - quite cheap too.
CamBam is very powerful and better suited to do multiple parts on a say sheet..
I use both and could not be more happy.

    both do 2,5d very well.

    Greetings all,
I am trying to cut aluminum with an 1/8 3 flute end mill I have set the rpms to 11000 and as soon as the mill touches the material it snaps. I have a feed rate set to 20 not sure where else to turn at this point. I followed all recommended settings by the end mill manufacturer. any help would be great

    Hi,
3,4,5, toothed bits are for harder material like steel.
Try 1 fluted, dedicated aluminium bits.
Don`t know about your spindle but mine would not have enough torque at 11 000 so it might snap simply because it stalls?

Great read, I'm sure this will help me on my setup. @Doug Pittman How is your CNC coming along? I have a C-beam from the online store. I'm going to use it to make my own Sphinx XL with linear guide rails. Any tips for making sure the frame does not flex? I am using C-beams 500mm Linear guides with threaded rod. Should I upgrade to Ball screws?
