Forgive me because I know next to nothing about cnc machines: I run a woodshop and am expanding my operation to making custom stave drum sets. This requires a huge lathe or a router jig to round the drums. So my idea is a cnc machine that has an x and a z axis with a router gantry - then the drum is connected to a chuck that just spins slowly while the router does all the moving and work. Sorry it’s kinda hard to explain. Any help or guidance or if this has been done before would be greatly appreciated! -Z range of motion would need to be about 8” -X range of motion would need to be about 20”
Wow! That guy is brilliant. I wish he went into a little more detail regarding the software set-up he did. I will look and see if he has more info.
Just contact him (-: He is using LinuxCNC for the control, GRBL based controllers cannot do the rotary axis so you are going to have to use LinuxCNC or Mach3 (or a similar commercial product) that can handle rotary axes properly.

As a LinuxCNC user... If you want to focus on making stuff and not getting bogged down with learning machine control historical theory and programming, go for the Mach 4 controller option. More expensive, but you'll be up and running in no time.
