Hi all, complete newbie here. Looking to build a basic yet versatile machine for engraving on wooden breadboards and furniture I make. (jamesbillingsfurniture.com) Reason I want to make is, besides loving to create, the ones in my budget are often restrictively small. Is it possible to build one that can be placed on a large surface in the position you want to work on? Kind of mobile, or pick and place? Any links to plans? Thanks all
I can think of only one example posted over the years and that was posted by @Mark Carew. I can't seem to find it though as it was posted as thread and not a build. What you seek is really not that difficult though. The main issue is having a clean base with no interference. Give me a couple days and I'll throw you a concept. Main questions would be how large of an area are you trying to cover and what are you thinking about in the way of an engraving spindle?
Thanks Rick, If you mean what size engraving, I'd say A4 size would be plenty, most will be just a line of text and logo. Work piece size would be bigger, say 24" x 24". would it be possible to have laser and router spindle interchangeable? If not then just laser. James
[Oops, sorry I didn't notice this was posted in the laser section. I tend to read from the new posts page without paying much attention as to which part of the forum the questions are coming from.] As far as simple designs go I would just suggest going with the smallest of the ACRO systems and adding a plywood skid at the base and then focusing the laser to the table top level. As far as dual purpose machines best advice is don't. Lasers need to be fast and agile and routers need to be slow and stout and a crossover is like asking a sumo wrestler to run track.
