I notice that most of the builds here show the flexible coupling between the beam end plate and the stepper motor.

Would there be a downside to having the coupling before the end plate?

This would allow the stepper motor to be mounted directly to the end plate, instead of offset with spacers.

In the case of C-beam, this would then sit inside the beam, which may allow for longer beam length travel.

If I am not describing this well, I can mock this up with some parts and take a picture...

Any thoughts or insights would be appreciated and greatly help me continue with my build.

The issue is not putting it on that side but supporting the feed rod with a bearing. The aluminum coupler is spiral cut and wont do a good job of supporting that end of the feed rod. (especially if it is a long travel). You would end up relying on the lead screw nut to bear the load
