I have just installed a new spindle on my Workbee CNC which was runnning wonderfully until today... I was going to change my limit switch positions and I noticed the connector for my Z axis loose so I snapped it back together.... Now my blackbox wont connect up to my PC and returns this error. [16:43:09] [ connect ] PORT INFO: Port is now open: COM1 - Attempting to detect Firmware [16:43:09] [ connect ] Checking for firmware on COM1 [16:43:09] [ connect ] Detecting Firmware: Method 1 (Autoreset) [16:43:10] [ connect ] Detecting Firmware: Method 2 (Ctrl+X) [16:43:11] [ connect ] Detecting Firmware: Method 3 (others that are not supported) [16:43:13] [ connect ] ERROR!: No supported firmware detected - you need a controller with Grbl 1.1x on it, or there is a problem with your controller. Closing port COM1 [16:43:13] [ disconnect ] PORT INFO: Port closed Is my stepper driver board fried? I unplugged all wires except 24v and serial usb but still not connecting. Power light is on on the blackbox and usb light flashes a couple times when I try to connect but then goes away.
COM1 is an onboard motherboard port. Should be COM3 or up, make sure you are selecting the correct port Secondly, disconnect whatever you connected last, might be wired wrong causing a short: See docs:blackbox:faq-usb-connection-failed [OpenBuilds Documentation], if it did not damage something.
I have changed it to COM4 but still not working. I had not had any issues with using COM1 in the past. I have all of the motors and accessories disconnected at this point.
Impossible. COM1 and 2 are reserved for onboard serial ports on all computer motherboard's. Its in the core specification. COM3 and up are available for expansion and virtual (USB) ports. COM1 example DE-9
In my intial setup I changed the COM1 port to a different number and it allowed me to assign com1 to the ftdi port. I will change it all back to default and assign the ftdi to com3. If thats not the problem whats next?
Try a different PC. Also possible that something killed the controller, as it was working until the work you did above. Sadly that is why its important to only work with power off, and double check wiring, there is always the risk something can get damaged
did you get this resolved ? mine is doing the exact same thing, except it is on COM3 and always has been, but everything else is identical, even rewiring a limit switch, but for sure power was off (I was remounting the box and PS's)
Sure it was wired correctly? incorrectly wired limits is a popular way of causing shorts, thus the warnings on docs:blackbox:connect-xtension-limit [OpenBuilds Documentation] and docs:blackbox:connect-micro-limit [OpenBuilds Documentation]
yes checked and rechecked it twice, the history is this has been working very well until recently, then i started having some problems with jobs stopping in the middle with no error on screen. changed to my newer laptop and it hasnt given me the problem of quitting since (only a couple of days). but i upgraded my homebuilt frankenstein to a 1515 using just the parts from openbuilds and transfered everything over to it. it has been working while i leveled the spoilboard and machined in the x and y fences and as i was gearing up to do a project, it quit connecting Thanks Tim H
Assuming something didnt kill it already, have you followed the Troubleshooting guide yet: docs:blackbox:faq-usb-connection-failed [OpenBuilds Documentation] Sounds like Windows Power settings: docs:blackbox:install-windows-selective-suspend [OpenBuilds Documentation] more likely
I'm having the same issue. I use the interface but the cable broke so I need to use the laptop and I keep getting the same error. It used to work in the past and I haven't changed anything. [13:56:12] [ usb ports ] Detected a change in available ports: [ No devices connected ] [13:56:20] [ usb ports ] Detected a change in available ports: [COM4] [13:56:28] [ connect ] PORT INFO: Port is now open: COM4 - Attempting to detect Firmware [13:56:28] [ connect ] Checking for firmware on COM4 [13:56:28] [ connect ] Detecting Firmware: Method 1 (Autoreset) [13:56:29] [ connect ] Detecting Firmware: Method 2 (Ctrl+X) [13:56:30] [ connect ] Detecting Firmware: Method 3 (others that are not supported) [13:56:32] [ connect ] ERROR!: No supported firmware detected - See docs:blackbox:faq-usb-connection-failed [OpenBuilds Documentation] for more details. Unfortunately, it's my turn. Just started having this problem. CNC was in the middle of milling work and suddenly my laptop gone blank and switched off. After the laptop restart, i was getting the below error message in OpenBuilds Control software. ERROR!: No supported firmware detected - See docs:blackbox:faq-usb-connection-failed [OpenBuilds Documentation] for more details. Closing port COM4 Tried everything, as suggested at "docs:blackbox:faq-usb-connection-failed [OpenBuilds Documentation]". But the problem still persists. I've just raised a ticket. While waiting, i thought of posting the issue here, in case someone found a solution.
The FAQ is comprehensive. Do go over all your wiring though - as by far the most often cause of this is damage caused by some form of user mistake (often accidental) and if you do end up replacing the BlackBox the same issue could damage another one if that was the case Also make sure your PSU is not the cause (Using a quality Meanwell, or some unknown brand?)
It can't be. Everything stopped in the middle of a job. I checked the wiring on the outside. Everything looks okay. Do you want me to open the Blackbox check?
Looking around, just remembered that i was lifting the Probe Plus to put it on the hook. That's when everything stopped. Will it be an issue if I touched the Probe Plus while the machine is running? I've used the probe plus multiple times without an issue.
