Last week, I connected my Blackbox X32 to the power supply for the first time, and something immediately shorted out. I thought I had everything connected correctly, but apparently not. So I have two questions:

    1. Can someone identify the circled component on the circuit board? A friend of mine checked it and found it was causing a short circuit. He can replace it, but we have no idea what it is.
    2. Can you tell from the wiring if I connected something incorrectly? Because as far as I can tell, everything looks right. Or not?

Thanks in advance for your help!!!

    Diode is a "M4" (1N4004) Google Search

"Weho" knockoff of the original Meanwell might explain damage? Unless it was wired wrong (reversed polarity would pop that diode too for example)

Thanks Peter. Do these come in different resistance levels, and which one do I need? Or all all 1N4004 the same?
    And

I bought the power supply together with the X32 as a set from Ratrig. I suppose it is an original?

it just probably my fault, I must have messed up the wiring somewhere. All part of the learning curve .

last question: Do you perhaps have a full wiring diagram for future reference?

    Thanks a lot!!!

The original brand is a Meanwell https://www.meanwell.com/upload/pdf/LRS-350/LRS-350-SPEC.PDF - but ultimately, you'd know best if there was any wiring mistakes, PSU not set to correct voltages, etc

All the same, SMA footprint. BUT that wont bring it back to life after rest of boards been damaged. It doesn't even need that component in normal operation (thats more of a reverse wiring indicator...)

Well, my friend was able to replace the damaged diode, and it all appears to be working again. But he also tested the power supply based on your remarks. And indeed he found it was not good. It has peaks of about 40 V. And that should be a flat line of 24 V as I understand.

    Wiring seemed to be fine.

So I’ll make a claim at the supplier because this seems to be a hardwareproblem then, which should be under warranty.

Yeah good clean 24v power. Look for a reputable brand like a Meanwell :)

Is there any load on the supply when making the scope trace? This is a switching power supply and some of these need some sort of load on them to deliver clean regulated power.

We have had some damaging run-ins with that brand before, its not just the testing setups, they have rather noisy ripples under load too. Take the cover off one, and an original Meanwell, huge difference in component count, the off-brand is even quite quite a lot lighter when you hold them in hand. Cost saving = remove filtering

I haven't run into Weho supplies before - but will agree that Meanwell builds quality supplies that have a pretty strong presence in consumer electronics products.

:) Disclaimer not saying they "are" bad, just saying Meanwells are best (at least recommended) - and when we do see damaged electronics, there is usually a good reason we ask what PSU was used during the first round of discovery. It happens. (In this case I did not need to ask, pictures were included already)
