I'm working on my first CNC build and I'm opting to build something like the OX. I want a heavy duty machine with a large work space.

So far I have decided to start with the complicated stuff: motors, wiring and controller, and then move on to the actual building of the mill. This will be my summer project this year.

I have opted to purchase the following parts to begin my project:

    Stepper Motors (qty4)

He wasn't sure of the torq on these but thought they were around 175, I'm hoping they are powerful enough for my build

    12V Regulated Power Supply

same as in the OX build

    Arduino Uno R3

    Arduino CNC Shield v 3.03
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/271659685052
This looks like it should work well as a controller, however I'm not sure how to connect the 6wire stepper motors to the 4 pins on the controller.

Pololu A4988 Motor Controllers w heatsink

now hopefully I can get everything wired up without destroying anything!

For the mill itself I'm using a:
Dremel 8220 12v battery powered drill - (why battery powered you say!... well I'm also creating a 12v 1.5amp powered adapter so the dremel will run off 120v when connected to the CNC)

Any advice on this would be great! I'm a noob and this is my first build but I'm also an electronics/computer guru so I'm looking forward to the challenge!

    Hi N.G,

I think the 'first build' is a journey of learning - but it is just such great fun that nothing should ever dissuade you. Once you have started out, that's it, you will be committed to the world of CNC building forever.

Good fortune with your first project my friend, I look forward to reading more of your progress.

Another thought I have had.. if my battery dremel runs on 12v and my shield runs on 12v maybe the power is compatible? Any advice on this?
