I am designing an automated microphone positioning mechanism that must be quiet to avoid interfering with audio measurements. The mechanism will be stationary during measurements (measure for 2 seconds, move, measure again, repeat…), so the main issue is buzzing while stepper motors are holding a fixed position. Do NEMA23 motors buzz when held in position by the Openbuilds BlackBox controller?

    Thanks for any insights!

Disabling the motors would eliminate their ability to hold movable parts against gravity, correct?

Depends. If the machine is orientated where its possible, and its heavy, and not counterbalanced, yes.
