    Hi everyone!

I'm a total newbie in this part of the CNC-world, and would very much appreciate your feedback.

Currently I have a Stepcraft 600 series 1 with a Kress 800 spindle. I draw everything I make in VCarve Pro 7.5. The files are then exported in a WinPC-NC format. The Stepcraft is controlled by a laptop running WinPC-NC.

This setup has worked well, but it seems the MiniMill is able to mill rounder circles at a faster speed. Since I got a "birthday discount" I put in this order:

      $129.98
1 × CNC xPRO V3 Controller Stepper Driver

This product cannot be reordered because it's out of stock.

    • Checkbox 379269 label
      [IMG]
      $39.95
3 × NEMA 23 Stepper Motor - High Torque Series
    • Checkbox 379270 label
      [IMG]
      $418.95
      1 × OpenBuilds MiniMill
Add 3 NEMA 23 Stepper Motors?:
      No
      Add 24V Power Supply?:
      Yes
    • Checkbox 379272 label
      [IMG]
      $9.99
      1 × Spindle/Router LED Light Ring
I plan to get either a DeWalt or Bosch spindle.

    So to my questions:

    1) Can I still use VCarve, or do I need additional software?
    2) Is the controller a good controller for the motors? The regular 23s were out of stock.
    3) Which GUIs for controlling the CNC can run on a very old Win98 laptop?

I'm really excited about getting into this part of the "trade". I'm going on a trip to the US late Feb and will pick it up at the hotel before I return home. A full build thread will follow.
