I just installed the XYZ touch probe. Went into Z Probe and set it to XYZ touch probe plus. Double checked Grbl and $6 shows Disabled which should equal 0. Machine has been homed. Ran the probe function and received this error: Probe Failure: The probe is not in the expected initial state before starting probe cycle where G38.2 and G38.3 is not triggered and G38.4 and G38.5 is triggered. This is on an X-Carve machine with and X-controller. Please advise
Check the Troubleshooting tab - make sure probe is off and only shows triggered once the circuit is completed (magnet > collet > bit > lift plate to test touch)
X, Y, Z, Probe, Door Sensor and buttons all show "Off." Touch the plate to the bit and it shows triggered. Nothing on any axis, door sensor or buttons.
Perfect. Then the probe is correctly configured Does the status change when you clip magnet to spindle? (If so, EARTH to DC GND short somewhere)
Not sure I get it. In order to get probe to show triggered I have the magnet connected to the spindle. If I unclip and touch the plate, nothing happens. My X-controller is a two wire system.so blue(sig) to probe input and black to Gnd. My z-probe that came with the machine works just fine and yes it is unhooked. LOL Red wire is taped and not in use.
Indicates a short somewhere else in the system allowing current to flow from spindle body (AC EARTH) back to controller's DC GND Also a safety issue, so must be found and fixed XYZ Probe Plus with VFDs and other ground-loop inducing components Probe reveals an older fault, but its been there for a while probably. Process of elimination. Unplug PC USB, Endstops, etc one at a time to find where the short is.
Actuated the following: X- Triggered Y- Triggered Z- Triggered Probe Triggered Not sure how to test the USB. Also checked the E-stop. Checked wiring on the probe and everything is tight. Checked connections on the controller and all are tight.
I use and IOT so the spindle turns on with my old Easel system and VT Transfer. I did notice that Openbuilds Control software will turn the spindle on when I click "Tool On" but it will not turn the spindle off. On the back of the X-controller I can wire to "Spindle (0-10v) or Spindle (PWM). I am wired to (0-10v). Do I need to be wired to (PWM)?
The software sends an M5. M5 turns of PWM (0-10v is derived off the PWM anyway so it too) and the Tool Enable signals. If its a VFD spindle, you likely haven't configured the VFD correctly (Min Freq parameter) to stop when the 0-10v signal drops below (24000/7200min *10v = ~3v)
I use a DW611 router for the spindle wired to "Spindle (0-10v). Also, the limit swtiches (Endstops) are all new and I checked them with my meter before installing. What do I try next? Any chance the probe is defective?
Can you post pictures of how you wired this? The Dewalt doesn't have a speed input... If its some 3rd party speed controller it might be the source of your issues No, because you tested it here and its working exactly as it (on its own) should... problems start when you touch the machine, because of a short circuit somewhere else on the machine Have you read post #7 above - go out to the machine, find the short circuit between DC GND and AC EARTH and fix it
I will take pictures and post them. As for the short I cannot find any. Everything worked perfect using just the Z axis probe but I wanted XYZ. Pics to follow.
The Z probe may have SIG and GND swopped - hiding the real problem (it still exists, but doesn't get in the way) That is discussed in the link shared with you in Post #7 too, so do have a proper read through that
Here are the wiring pics. Wiring on IOT: Controller - Spindle (0-10v) to IOT + Controller - Grd to IOT - X, Y and Z limit switches are obvious Probe to Controller: Sig (blue) to "Probe" on Controller GND on "Probe" to GND on Controller Red(5v) on "Probe" not connected as I do not see a place for it on the controller. OK the IOT is fine - we use it too. That has optocoupled inputs, that's fine Not sure why you mention limits in every reply? Disconnect red. Swop Blue and Black. This is NOT the right way to do it, but until you someday proceed to find the short its the "unsafe workaround" you can try. DONT recommend it. DONT use it forever. DONT expect things to work like it should (LEDs won't light etc).
I have tried to find a short and cannot find any…. I had my neighbor look at it as well and he is an electrician and could not find a short. Don’t know where to go from here. Probably will have to go back to using just the z probe
Yes, I read it but as you said it is a work around and I want it to be right. I am sure you can appreciate that. I am just totally confused and frustrated at this point. Again, thank you for all of your help.
Try the workaround... Gets you past the point of frustration for now. Then in a week or a month go back and use a process of elimination to find where the short is
You are looking for continuity between mains EARTH and dc GROUND. Are you using a laptop? Is it plugged into the mains? Does unplugging it help? If that's not it please confirm whether a multimeter on continuity setting shows a connection between mains EARTH and dc GROUND or not (as @Peter Van Der Walt has said the symptoms very strongly suggest that there is). If you do get a continuity reading, even if it's a high resistance, you need to follow Peter's advice to track it down and eliminate it as it is potentially (excuse pun) dangerous. Alex.
Alex, I am not using a laptop. I have a dedicated desktop that is on a completely different circuit. I don't claim to be an electrician so, I call on my neighbor who is a licensed electrician. He metered everything from the circuit that my desktop is on the the circuit that the router is on. Both came back negative. He checked my USB and it is good. I uninstalled the XYZ Touch Probe Plus and hooked up my "Z" probe. Loaded a program and have now been running for an hour and 40 minutes with no issue. Don't know what to say past this but, there is no short present here. Thank you for your input. While your hardware was not a success, your software is awesome!
