Hi All I am in the process of gathering knowledge prior to building a custom ox variant . Would rack and pinion be the optimal direction to go if planning a extra heavy duty ox Has anyone used products from this company ? http://www.atlantadrives.com/intracks.htm all thoughts and suggestions are welcomed . Richard
I haven't used these people, but then again I'm in the UK. They look like they do just the right stuff though. I like their Helical Racks, they seem to be just the thing to buy. I wish we had as many companies like this, as you find in the US and Canada. Check out Hytech's build before you go any further though. Gray
Gray just beat me to it The 'rack & pinion' concept has been used particularly well in the construction of the StrongOX and the details are here http://www.openbuilds.com/builds/area-51-cnc-parts-f-117-cnc-gear-rack-drive-system.1428/ Tweakie.
That link you provided is very interesting. I like the concept of the gear rack doing double duty as a linear rail. Especially the 90 degree version, the rack could mount to the top of a good sized extrusion, and the gantry beam rest atop that. Question is, based on the prices I see for good rails for HiWin and NSK I wonder what the pricing is, I bet it's not very affordable, but worth checking into...
Well after doing some reading about their products I have decided on the style and choice of Rack and pinion which will use , but instead of straight cut gears, I am going to opt for helical rack & pinions . Based on this F A Q . Helical rack & pinions have several advantages over straight (spur) versions. They are quieter running, especially at high speeds. They have more teeth engaged so they can handle higher loads. Their lengths are a nice round number, like 1,000 mm or 2,000 mm, instead of a multiple of pi like straight . Richard
Gerald I am following your build and at the same time selecting a few parts I will use to enhance your design . Being that I have never built or owned a cnc I will be relying on your input as a veteran builder . I will also document and post my complete build here once I have gathered all the parts and begun the build . Gray I have found this link that has a general price list for Atlanta helical racks . I am not certain of the size (module) or quality to request . http://www.hmkdirect.com/shop/39 20 100/ Richard
Yes , it is . Atlanta is a German Co. I believe . There is this American Co, that also has rack and pinion . http://www.mooregear.com/index.html
I generally use Moore or CNC router parts for my rack needs, but here are a few others that carry them. https://www.finelineautomation.com/products/gear-rack http://us.misumi-ec.com/vona2/mech/M1000000000/M1006000000/M1006050000/ http://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-gears/=wb7c08 http://www.bostongear.com/products/open/rack.html
anyone know where I can find the area51cncparts items? Looks like the site isn't active. I am trying to take my modified 5x5 ox metal and add rack and pinions to it. Any thoughts or advice on how to complete this?
