I am using an ACRO with black box controller. Currently, I'm only using X and Y. Is it possible to use a rotary on the Z axis if its not in use?

I tried searching for similar topics but couldn't find anything.

    Thank you

As grblHAL supports 4th axis, it would be easier yes. X on X, both Ys in parallel on Y1. Y2 becomes A when you flash the 4th axes firmware, and you still have option for a Z axis.
You can use the Z driver but would need to compile yourself. The default is great though.
Adding a little Z also opens doors to multipass cutting, focusing, 3d lasering, etc
