On my DIY Ox-based machine there's a problem that only occurs when the spindle gets bigger loads. Normally everything works fine, but on deeper cuts the connection between the controller (xPro v4) and my laptop disconnects, not every time but way too often. Before I had the spindle, controller and laptop powered thru the same extension cord, and then the connection disconnected pretty much every time I started the spindle on high RPM. Then I moved the spindle to get its power from another socket, and there's still this issue. Could this be solved with a better USB cord or do I need to install some noise filters to some/all power cords?
I have a Mafell FM-1000 as the spindle: FM 800 / FM 1000 (PV) / FM 1000 (PV) WS: Mafell AG, I'm using the power cord that it has. It's not controlled by CNC software, I just turn it on/off manually. The power cord runs in the same cable drag chain as the other cables (Stepper cables + z & y -axis limit switch cables)
I have the AMB version of that with the digital control. I had similar problems with the V4 (before I fried the y limit switch input from static discharge). I like the V4, but it has some serious drawbacks from a protected circuit design perspective (on the bright side, the people who make them are pretty responsive and can repair them, but I went a different route). If I breathed on it wrong, it would stop, but that was a grounding issue. As for USB problems, what are you using, I have had tremendous problems using the USB C adapters, 3 different ones (my Mac only has USB C ports), don't have the problem when I use my Raspberry Pi with regular USB.
Keep your high voltage and low voltage lines separate. I can tell you the Mafel power cord is probably not shielded (I know my AMB one was not). Are you using the 110 or 220V version? I'm also not sure if your wiring is shielded (is the stock wires that came with the OB machines shielded? I don't think it is, or if it is it's not wired correctly as the shielding needs to be grounded which the OB ones are not). When I rewired everything for the 6 Pack controller I went with, I went to Home Depot and picked up 30 feet of shielded 18 gauge 4 wire Alarm cable (around 70c per foot).
I have no idea if the power cord on the Mafell is shielded, probably not. How big a distance should there be between the high voltage & low voltage wires? I have a basic USB-B -> USB-A cable, but getting a better quality one wouldn't hurt I guess.
What peter said. Take it out completely. Distance is hard to determine because there are many factors that go into calculating an EMF field.
Did what Peter suggested, and moved the power cord to the dust hose. No errors so far, thanks! After the last glitch I had lost all of my GRBL settings, so it's very nice to hopefully get rid of the issues. But now I got the chance to check out all kinds of new settings of OB CONTROL that I hadn't used before, it really is a nice piece of software!
