is there a reason I can not or should not use the machine frame as a ground for my end stops as long as i ground the GRBL to the frame?

you should not, because it creates ground loops.
for best electrical noise resistance you must use a star ground.
there is one ground point, and everything is grounded to it.
this includes the frame, which means the frame cannot be used as a conductor.

    Why star ground????

Good information. If I understand correctly, it would be a roll of the dice on whether I had problems related to this or not. Since, I have enough bad rolls without adding more, I will stick to the ground coming back to the Grbl.

Thank you for educating me a bit more,
