Well... that didn't work. CAM to Wood, doesn't match.

Hey folks, I would greatly appreciate help. I've got the LEAD 1515 and through all fault of my own (I'm sure I've screwed this up) my designs don't translate to wood. So, I'm using VCarve Pro and I wanted to create a simple design to measure machine accuracy. The idea being I can run it again in a month, a year, whatever and measure the differences.

So my material size in VCarve is 9"x9" (to be cut on a 10"x >9" blank). I have an 8"x8" and 7"x7" profile path around the edge and this is where it went wrong. When I cut the dang thing yesterday, my 8"x8" actually cut 10-3/16" x 10-3/16" and my 7"x7" cut 8-15/16" x 8-15/16". Now if it were much smaller variations I'd expect I've got some play or some other dang thing, but this is too big to not be a configuration I've boned up. I'm using the OpenBuilds GRBL post processor (Inches).

I'm including a simulated view of what it ought to look like and the gcode for the outer profile. I've run that gcode through NCViewer (ncviewer.com) and it appears the gcode is good.

I fully expect this is no where near enough information to go on, so please tell me what other information might help.

    Thanks,
    Shawn

Did you a) remember to load a machine profile from CONTROL > Grbl Settings > Select a machine from the list > LEAD1515 > Save and Reset when prompted?
and b) If its still off - by more than a percent or two - you did you change steps per mm by any chance? Our leadscrews+BlackBox = +-200 steps per mm (Profiles in Grbl Settings sits around 198/199 steps per mm)
    c) You check calibration: Wizards and Tools > Calibration menu in CONTROL

    Hi Peter,

Thanks for the super quick response! So I'm trying to track with what you're saying. I'm using CONTROL v1.0.364 and don't see a "Grbl Settings". It may be important to note at this point, I've never connected my laptop to the controller, I've only used a flash drive. I can bring my laptop out to the shop to do this if need be.

So for that, I ran through the "Prepare USB flashdrive for Interface" wizard. From the <USB ROOT>/PROFILES/LEAD1515.SET file I've confirmed the following lines,

    $100=198.109 ;X-axis steps per millimeter
    $101=198.109 ;Y-axis steps per millimeter
    $102=199.100 ;Z-axis steps per millimeter

However it's worth noting in <USB ROOT>/PROFILES/ there are set files for 15 other machines (16 files in total).

OK so you use Interface instead of CONTROL - that is fine, but the steps of the same questions change a little

On the Interface the question would then be:

Did you remember to load a machine profile from Tools and Utils > Load Grbl profile > LEAD 1515 during initial setup

We can ignore the other questions for now, as I suspect the fact the you never had it hooked up to a computer, means you skipped the LEAD1515 Wiring and Software video? One of its steps is the Profile, and without a profile sizes would be off. So probably that, unless you reply back that you did apply it for sure.

Those are files used by Tools and Utils > Load Profile. That is correct, but just half the setup steps. Having the profiles on Interface is good, but you still got to write those settings to the BlackBox. Most folks already did that from CONTROL during initial setup as shown in the Wiring/Software video, but it is possible from Interface too as noted above.

Grbl Settings will only show if you ARE connected to the controller (it can't read settings off a controller it can't talk to - so nothing to display if PC is not connected to BlackBox) - but regardless, you don't need to use CONTROL, just more a case of most people do use CONTROL for the intial setup and follow along with the Videos

Ok, I'm going to check this out, that video specifically and get back to you. I kinda figured I missed a step in my mad dash to turn wood in dust.

Well that's embarrassing but also great to resolve! Thank you Peter!
