X Y Table OpenRail Build

    What are the pros and cons of the OpenRail system vs. the V-slot system?

    In a lot of ways they do the same thing but differently. It really depends on the application your wanting to apply them to. Kinda like having just the right tool for the job. With V-Slots you obviously have the structure built in so you build it and you can ride a gantry on it. This is the main feature of V-Slot that makes it stand out in the world of modular building systems. There are other nice little pluses such as being able to run the belt and acme rods though the centers of the profiles as well as being able to connect and build on to it in unlimited configurations.
    The OpenRails offer the unique ability to mount to almost any t-slot/v-slot system as well as sheet materials and basicly anywhere you can sink a a screw. For instance I has someone building carbon fiber drawers using OpenRail mounted to the draw sides and laminated into the layers of fiber I can picture this could be done with wood drawer sides as well. OpenRail also have the ability to stack one on the other while the 'V' overlaps on each side creating a single narrow rail that has a host of uses. One thing the OpenRails can do (that I have not see implemented) is bend around contours. Not sure what you would use it for, maybe a camera track? If you screw the rails to cut wood sheets the rails could potentially follow the curves and give an interesting linear rail. I suppose you could make an oval track as well. I hope this helps a little to give you an idea of just a few differences I can note quickly off the top of my head.
    The best thing I can suggest would be to download a few of the models to see how both V-Slot and OpenRail are being implemented so far.
    To be honest I think we have just scratched the surface of what can be done with each of these linear building systems and now that they are in the hands of the OpenBuilders community I look forward to an awesome 2014 machine design explosion of ideas!

    Does this system work vertically as well? Or will the upper belt stretch too much (compared to the lower)?

    I have not tried it like this but I do not see why it would not work with a light load. However if your worried about the belt system you could always go with the hidden acme stage X-Y table system shown here:

    Hello, I want to build the same thing for my University project. But I want to add a very high speed motor to make it move in a speed of 45 mm/sec. My question is, what do I need to add to my shopping cart in terms of control board and if the motors that the website offers will be suitable to the above speed, or do I have to order a special on?
    If it is possible to specify what else do I need to add, such as control board, wires etc. I want to build the complete thing.
    One more question, can it hold about 10-20 kg?
    And last, I want it to have the ability to move at least (x,y)=( 200,200) cm, meaning I will need a bigger rails, does it available to purchase on the site? ( I could not find it)

    You will need a far more substantial system than the one shown for the loads, lengths, and speeds desired. These are hobby grade materials that cannot begin to do what you seek. You will need a system far more industrial grade, something that will likely require a steel support structure.

    You may be able to get the parts you need from someone like Grainger or McMaster but it's the kind of system you will have to fully develop yourself. This is not something you will likely find as a stock design or kit anywhere.

    Do you think this would work upside down? I want to make a claw/crane game and think this looks like it would be exactly what I need.

    Hello, community, I have a query regarding the XY stage and since I could not find another suitable place so I am posting my question here. I have a unidirectional stage made of C beam Linear actuator 500mm and I am expanding it to XY Stage using another C Beam Linear actuator. Currently, I have a 12 V power supply, Stepper motor driver, and an Arduino to run the stage via Lab View; so my question is that do I need to purchase the power supply, Stepper motor driver and an Arduino again for running my XY stage?

    It's fairly common to run more than one stepper off a single Arduino and power supply, assuming of course the power is of sufficient size to run more than one stepper (which most are). You will of course need to add another stepper driver to the system. Search a bit on google and you should have no difficulty finding a wiring diagram to add that second stepper.

    Hello @Studioevoit Thank you for your interest. That machine was just a quick mock up of what can be done using the V-Slot building system. I used on of the XY table examples and added a Z axis.
    The file was done very basic and I do not think I saved it at the time, but if I come across it I will share it. You could easily mock this up for yourself using the provided examples as well.
