This is the build log for my first CNC machine based on the C-Beam Plate Maker. Plan is for the addition of limit switches, custom UI, and probably lots of learning.
I had been planning on building a CNC mill for a few years since I got my first 3D printer up and running and was ready to move from prototyping parts in plastic before cutting in metal. Finally pulled the trigger as I was tired of hearing my son complain about how I was complaining about not having the time! Project started in earnest with the arrival of 3 packages on the same day.
As I'm sure anyone who has used the Open Builds Parts Store already knows, they sure know how to pack a box! The other two were the controller board and stepper motors.
Having lost all semblance of patience I immediately dove in.
[ 3/24/17 ]
Finally got to the local lumber store to pick up some 1/2" MDF for the base/spoiler board. Hoping to get some time this weekend to finish the assembly of the last axis and the frame.
[ 3/25/17 ]
Got the MDF cut. For the mount plate (the bottom one) I am using 20mm M4 screws with M4 tee-nuts that are recessed so the spoiler board will lay flat on top.
[ 3/26/17 ]
Assembly mostly done. Waiting on wire, limit switches, a few other bits and pieces to start connecting the electronics.
[04-06-17]
Finally had a bit of time to temp wire up the electronics and see what happens.
[ 04-19-17]
Power distribution box for the mill side. There will be one at the control box side as well. Using STP wiring for interference reduction.

Reason for this Build
It was the logical progression after the 3D printer. Of course it now has spawned visions of a CNC Lathe, a 4 or 5-axis mill, a laser cutter....where does it all end?Inspired by
