If you consider the all software chain, you will need to look at a modern controller (32bits >100mhz, able to manage acceleration). The hardware I feel is more than adequate for what I need atm. If acceleration becomes an issue and I am unable to sort it out via the firmware side then upgrading would be an option. At the moment though I am wanting to stay with the arduino's for the cost and the ability for people to replicate the build for as cheap as possible. Ramps kits are about as easy as they can possibly be to get your hands on. This also gives me a good reason to release a new updated firmware for the Ramps kit focused solely on a laser cutter.
Looking forward to following your build. You might take a look at GRBL-Mega as It now supports the Ramps board. I am using it with my small laser engraver.
How is this coming? I've built a few 3D printers and I'm interested in how it's working. I've got a lot of hardware here I can use and the aluminum I need to order for my Haribo Upgrade anyways.
