I am definitely impressed with your efforts there. Very nice design. I especially liked how well it tracked. In the video I was noticing that it was re-cutting (cutting the next depth) and was doing so very smoothly and seemingly with good precision. Have you done any performance testing? What sort of precision and repeat-ability are you getting? If you haven't done any of that and you are curious and have one of those el-cheapie digital calipers, they're usually pretty easy to clamp to an axis and set to get a good idea of what your machine can do.

I can't believe it has been three and a half years... In spite of the time passed, I am still absurdly excited and impressed with this project!

Oh well! Taking advantage of the plague quarantine to get this thing going. I do have a query though. You mentioned in the thingiverse thread that you are using Fusion360 to generate your gcode. How are you executing said gcode? I suspect it is not mach3, as you said you are running smoothie rather than grbl. Or does smoothie accept mach3 streams as well? Are you manually jogging the axes to the corner of your stock, setting zero, and then just running it directly off of the SD card like a printer? Streaming it via pronterface? Inquiring minds want to know! :)

On thingiverse, Mr. Spiffcow said he was getting 80-100 ipm with 4mm deep cuts.
As far as precision goes, I have not seen anything stated. However, again on Thingiverse a gentleman posted a make of this project with the following image made using a fine tip ballpoint pen attached to the spindle holder. I think it speaks well of it...

I too have been very interested in this build as well, and have put together a better BOM, and am starting into the documentation as I get things printed, and put together. Complete documentation was something this project lacked, and it was also hard to follow the comment thread on Thingiverse for this build as well, especially since things have gone silent for over a year. So... I've started a Git Hub page here:
webnerdnick/plastic_monstrosity forked from his plain file repo. I'm hoping to compile everything in one place, and update as more details come together. Having it in a repo like this will allow others to contribute alternate sources for parts, technical changes, etc.. I'm also working on converting the OpenSCAD files to step files.

    Sounds awesome!
My own build got sidelined with other projects. I hope to get back to it this next summer.
