This is great @mytechno3d can't wait to see more! I really like the floating Z head concept, nice Build
BTW I have to ask, what would it take to get that V-Slot plate? We have a display shelf here at OpenBuild HQ for OpenBuilds 1st and this would look great on there.

during the cut, im assuming the reason for the floating torch holder, does the plasma torch tip ride on the piece of metal? it has been some years since I used one. does the torch need to stay in contact with the cutting material or does it need to be slightly above the material? sorry my brain is fried, so the wording of my question may not be clear.

This might be the coolest project I've seen for quite a while! Nice work sir! I look forward to more postings (as there is a plasma cutter somewhere in my future).

first of all, you made a very nice machine! I 'm working on a similar machine. So, I'm curious about what software are you using?

    Hello
Sorry for my late answer ...
The only reason of the floating torch holder is to set 0 on Z axis , you activate the endstop and go up for xx mm ( depend of the position of your endstop ) , this way your torch is just on metal sheet regardless of thickness .
During cutting operation , torch is around 1.5 mm above the metal sheet .
The cutting distance is very important for the quality of your cut .

    Hello
I use autocad ( or other like illustrator , skecthup .. ) to create parts , sheetcam to create g-code ans mach3 to control the machine .

Great info. With that software can you account for the plasma path to cut on the inside or outside of the design respectively?

This is done with Sheetcam , you can define "inside" , "outside" or "on" the path , just like Vectrics or cambam

My first machine is going to be plasma. I'm half way through the BOM for a complete custom build. I'm a bit lost as to how to connect a THC to the plasma voltage if there is no connections brought out. Can anybody help?
    Thanks

    Pete

    Hello
It really depend of the brand of your plasma .
On mine , there is 2 way to do the THC connection .
1 / using a plug on the back side of my hyperterm .( with 1/50 scale )
2 / Directly on the row voltage of the arc

I try both , i had some trouble with de 1/50 divider ( voltage was not correct ) so i 'm now using the raw valu of the arc and it is much better .
I'm using a low cost THC , a Proma THC SD

Thankyou for your very concise reply!

In the diagram above, the direct connection is to the 2 outer points of the Proma. Obviously, the main cables still go to the torch head. So, how do you get the 2 extra wires inside the connection? Is there an adapter that screws in between? Or, do you cut back a bit of the screen off the cables?

    Thanks
    Pete

It really depend of your plasma . On mine i had to drill the enclosure and make a connection on the electronic board .

    Thanks.
Can I ask for some more info?
What software and controller do you recommend for plasma cutting with THC?

I've just been reading the cs-lab.eu website, and that stuff is impressive. You're both in the EU, have you tested this stuff?

It depends of the thickness of the metal sheet .
I usually get an accuracy between 0.4 mm and 0.8mm
