Building a Sphinx based CNC based on Kyo's plans. Going with a 1000 x 500 table size.

This is my first CNC router, so be kind on the criticism. I'm still learning. Not an engineer, and not a machinist so I am having to research and learn aspect from both of those areas of study!

Currently i am reworking the frame still with current available parts just going to buy material to make the y and the z axis from openbuilds. The x axis is now going to be mobile similar to a 3d printer style.

I ordered the OpenBuilds MiniMill from the OpenBuilds Parts Store http://openbuildspartstore.com/ They were out of Motors and Electronics when I ordered so I had to source these items elsewhere. But it turned out well doing it this way.

This build is my version of the CBeam machine. I opted to NOT use the Gussets, and instead went for the 40, and 60 mil angle brackets to cut the price back a little further. I started with the smoothieboard but decided it was still "too new" and very much experimental. This build took me a few (2-3) days to complete. The CBeams and Lead-Screws really make building things faster since you don't have to clamor over belts.

Modify a Gen1 Cube printer into a small cnc router to cut pcbs and light (VERY light) milling work. Also easy to swap out the rotary head and mount a laser head for engraving.

This is my first attempt at building a spindle based CNC machine. The intention is to mill PCB boards and mill delrin blocks. The device was built with an Emergency Stop that actually cuts power to the spindle and motors. This is a post build write-up and consists of finished photo compilation and CAD renderings.

Generic 6 Axis (Stepper) Controller

This started as an attempt to learn to weld and quickly took on a life of its own.

Replaced the original Z-axis for a shapeoko with a c-beam upgrade. This upgrade required a nema 17 mount and a quiet spindle mount I printed with a 3D printer.

Approximately 910mm x 955mm x 82mm. There is 250mm available in the Z, but the gantry is only 82mm from the bed surface.

Repurposed Steel Table for CNC Router Build.

I have decided to buy and build the ooznest workbee screw driven cnc (1000x1000) and also decided to use some plates and extrusions from the ox cnc. I will never use two machines anyway and hoping to build a strong base for the workbee.

Minimill bundle, but with an extended X Axis

KYO SPHINX, CENTROID ACORN, GECKO 540, HALL EFFECT LIMIT SWITCHES, 2.2 KW, 24,000 RPM SPINDLE, WATER COOLED, 600 oz-in STEPPERS, INTENDED TO CUT ALUMINUM.

DIY scratch build consisting of gas pipe, skate bearings, 12mm birch, 3/4 maple v-core ply, Nema 23's, and arduino and CNC shield with DRV8825's.

The tale of how we put together our CNC Router, and some of the difficulties encountered. It is now ready for final testing and commissioning.

First and foremost, I want to create accurate parts for my model aircraft. In second line I am interested in the control and electronics of the milling machine. If you are interested in drawings and the parts list, feel free to contact me.

This is the original C-Beam Sphinx with the 16 wheel X gantry plates. I'm using the Ethernet Smoothstepper, Gecko G540 stepper driver and Mach 4 for motion control.

I added the steel to create a less flexible milling surface to make heavier cuts in aluminum. I can also do light steel cutting now as well. I wish OpenBuilds made a steel and rail version of these kits.

LEAD CNC

Hey all looking forward to sharing this build, I’ve learned a lot reviewing many of these great builds.

So for my senior project I decided to build a CNC router. I kind of need to get this done before May so we'll see what all goes down. It's going to be a 3 axis machine (for now) and will be able to handle 4x8 sheets of wood. This is my first build. It's going to be intresting..

Just ox cnc experiment

This is a lead 1010 build that I wanted to have a little fun with. I purchased the whole Lead 1010 kit, and felt like studying a few shortcomings of the original to see if I can improve it or just have some fun with it.

I made a 5x10 foot cnc out of the parts I bought on this site. It's been upgraded and tinkered with ever since. The end goal is to learn enough to learn to build a large 10x10 foot 3d printer.

Building the OB Lead 1515 was straight forward. The on-line OpenBuilds assembly videos were extremely clear and easy to follow. Initial build of this machine is with OpenBuilds BlackBox which simplified getting the electronics to work the first time. OpenBuilds staff are friendly and helpful.

CNC MILLING ROUTER

A complete CNC newbie is tackling a mighty challenge, Not only is he making a CNC router, He's going to try and upsize it.

Acquiring a CNC has been on my list for some time now. This concept is a bare bones, upgradeable machine that will not require a complete rebuild when new parts become available. With a cutting surface over 36" square, this beast should be capable of creating its own parts. Lowering the price to make upgrading and making this contraption beefier, faster, and more precise.

The ooznest OX CNC Machine is based on the OX CNC Machine designed by Mark Carew of Openbuilds, and incorporates many upgrades from the Openbuilds community. Mark Carew based the OX on the Routy, which was in turn based on the Shapeoko

This build has been an educational experience. Software and hardware alike.

Creating a CNC mitre (45°) cutter, for picture frame cutting. Starting with an OX, but inverting various parts and adding a material table, with a stepper-controlled measuring guide.

Dewalt 611 Router mount for mounting onto 20x60 v-slot

Just an idea right now but will attempt a prototype in the near future. Not sure if this has been tried before or not.....

I'm starting with the c-beam bundle, and I hope to end up with a pretty useful little platemaker/shallow relief carver. I'm hoping to discover how accurate and efficient it can be.

Building my first router and I choose the ooznest Ox since it looks to be the latest and greatest among routers.

I'm Brandoneous; hence, the BrandoneOuX, a cartesian CNC build. Large format (1000mm x 1000mm) but beefed-up to solidly augment the ability to cut Aluminum in addition to wood and other solid materials. As I am currently living in a rented apartment for an out-of-state job, my secondary challenge is to build a sound dampening enclosure that will function as a torsion box base, a sound dampening enclosure, and a dust containment system. This project has been a steep learning curve in an unfamiliar area for me. It has been a very rewarding experience and has opened up so many more possibilities to pursue in the future.

i wanted to use both the ox and the C beam C beam for the gantry because its stronger i also made the gantry 20 mm higher so i can cut thinker material i will maybe later go to rack& pinion on the 1500 mm Y axes also instead of the V wheels i will maybe go to hiwin in the furture

CNC OX 1500X3000

My first ever build. Straight C-beam with tinyg controller a few do-dads and some make do choices. Non-metric length lead screws to save long lead time. Jog knobs to cover the extra length and also practical. My old Bosch Colt never had it so good. Build out work remains, wire dressing, drag chain, vacuum, permanent base, etc.

This is my first CNC router build. I want to gain basic CNC building experience so I can go on to build other items such as a frosting or pancake printer.

Gantry style rigid build

The aim of this build is to have a CNC that can cut a FULL sheet of wood when I need it to, but also shrink down and cut smaller sheets the rest of the time. The prototype is based on an OX cnc but soon it will be completely custom using Openbuilds Parts

Design Change - Version 2.0 has a smaller foot print, custom gantry supports, and front and back covers. I will use standard V-Slot for gantry supports leaving me enough travel to manufacture the customer supports with this machine when completed. then update to final build. I also plan to install the controller into the front cover and power supply into the back cover. Should be nice and tidy.

I will post soon some more details.

My first attempt at building a CNC style machine. Overall my plan is to use the PlanetCNC breakout board and software to run the machine from a dedicated laptop/tablet.

I would recommend this challenge to any woodworker looking for something new.

A table top version of the open build xl router kit set build. This use of c - beam and xl kit set was coupled with Mach 3 controller running on Dell opti -plex 755 and win 7 pro licence. A Dell opti-plex 755 empty case was used to house the controls and wiring , including the limit switch and emergency stop safety circuits

This design is previously posted in this area. I downloaded the file in order to customize as I needed. I found that the parts were not identified. I went through the design in an attempt to name the parts and identify them by location.

This will be a CNC milling machine. My goal is to make this mill for the minimum cost I can while not sacrificing quality. In hope of staring an educational YouTube channel on CNC milling and 3D Printing. Along with when to use both.

Similar to C-Beam Machine build, but with inverted Y-axis assembly to shield drive screw. Integrated XZ gantry can be fixed to any solid surface. Build dimensions are 36" x 36" x 6".

First router build for speargun fabrication

The Story of the Scecina Memorial High School 1510 BUILD will unfold through a series of 10 minute Episodes. Each episode will consist of video showing how to assemble some aspect of the 1510 overlaid with a discussion about Technology, Art, Philosophy... and Life the Universe and Everything. Episode two is soon to follow. If sufficient interest ensues, the episodes may continue beyond the building of the 1510 to relate its use in the making of the Art.

This will be my second CNC build but this time a proper CNC not a small desktop model that I played with for a while to learn Gcode, It was great but now its time to start playing with the big boys and girls.
